For those who still don’t know, Dion White is the artist, producer and founder of the one man music label Mute Philosophy Productions. Its elements of influence involve a blend of 90s old school and modern hip hop culture. This upcoming next generation rap scholar aims to satisfy both old and new tastes, delivering thought provoking lyricism with every line. Dion White is an intelligent, easy going 20 year old visionary who grew up in the city of Pittsburgh, PA. His interest in music dates back to an early age, having listened to tapes and records owned by family members or close friends. From the late 90s into the early 2000s he distinctly remembers being exposed to r&b, neosoul, funk, jazz, and hip hop in its golden era. Interestingly enough, he got the idea of how to play the piano on a toy keyboard as a child. He received his first actual keyboard at age 11 and has since, even after everything he has learned, used it to create professional and remarkable sounding productions. In school he often got in trouble for tapping pencils on classroom desks. This young man believes to have written some of his first lines in Microsoft Office Word on a Windows 95 desktop computer. At the time a small cheap tape recorder was used to play back the premature rhymes and beats he made. After obtaining some self-taught skill on the keyboard, he then started putting together his own personal studio at age 15, buying recording equipment between working summer jobs and internships. In 2011, with minimal guidance, Dion constructed a small website selling online instrumentals. He hosted his own services with little success. However, in time he gained a substantial amount of practice which would become important later. Dion believes his own personal experience of hardship and observing the trials of others has contributed to who he is today. He credits the shortcomings and accomplishments of his mother and siblings as inspiration for most of his creative material. When viewed closely, it appears only natural for him to inherit most of the observable qualities and musical preferences of his predecessors. For some time Dion White refused to release or reveal his musical intentions for almost 3 years until he felt ready. It was only in December of 2012, after realizing he really knew nothing about the music industry, he began reading and asking questions regularly. When starting out Dion White was most often compared to Wale, J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, DMX and even a developing young and ambitious Nas. This mellow rap artist offsets his relaxed personality at times by spitting fiery, intricate lyrics on high energy tracks. Without batting an eye he then pivots direction, pulling people into a lighter more positive atmosphere. Today he does a great job of recreating that same genuine touch that captivated us in the past. He plans to motivate and mentor newcomers after him throughout his lifetime. When mentioning a versatile, matured hip hop child of the 90s, Dion White is certainly one to look out for.
