“Music for the Muted” is an experiment with the sensory perception of acoustic signals. These signals are created without even touching the the evoked instruments – electric guitar as well as bass – let alone playing them in the classical sense. The sounds are produced and modulated by experimentally operating effect pedals to playfully let musical structures take a back seat to sensations in the face of “droozing” sound waves. Although intuition plays a key role in composition, our “pieces” are by no means works of improvisation, as they are the fruit of a complicated process of selectively approaching and then evolving ideas into increasingly complex runs. In this way we attempt to perceive each individual element with a different sense – like a bass line, for instance, which might be tweaked by sensing the vibrations emitted from the amplifiers; another example would be the modulation of background-white noise (Störgeräusche) via exclusively tactile operation of the effect knobs, thus approaching the final desired form by literally fidgeting our way there. This results in multi-facetted soundscapes that challenge all senses in creation and perception.
The first serious collection of material thematically revolves around the notion of time and, more particularly, the measuring of time. The logic and reasoning behind this was determined in a similarly playful and intuitive manner as the method used for molding our sounds, always maintaining a limited range of sensory perception. The individual pieces were created with the focus on interlocking units of time in the western world. Step by step, we get to the bottom of how, why, and at what one point human beings become limited by these units of time, ultimately denying them the ability to treasure individual moments and leaving their lives void of meaning in the face of their own mortality.
