What's a DJ?

Is it nothing more than the man or woman on the 1s and 2s? Or is it the one who has known, loved, and shared music for the entirety of a lifetime?

Travis Brown, AKA DJ T-Bone Scarpone, gets the ring either way; it's just a question of how long you want to say he's been holding it. You wanna get all technical, claim that a man becomes a DJ when he buys his first suite of equipment, then T-Bone's been breaking foundations for six years on. You want to take that "music is in your soul" route and acknowledge the sum of the man's accomplishments, he's been at it for the better part of 20 years.

A child of where the Rockies meet the Rich (Estes Park, Colorado), DJ T-Bone honed his skills on the school circuit. Whether it was working out, smashing rivals, or celebrating victory, the Estes Bobcats sweated to T-Bone's mixes. When the lights went down, publicly or privately, T-Bone brought the tunes for that too. It wasn't long before he was spinning at a bar...and if you think this man doesn't love the music, understand he was too young to get a drink for the entire time he did it.

More than a dozen weddings, several additional bars, graduations, proms, and a 2008 Cheyenne Frontier Days (if you live in the area, you know what this means) later, T-Bone is a full-time DJ. Music is his job, his calling, and his life.

Oh, yes, there was also that time spent on stage with Kal Penn, Adam Rodriguez, and Eva Longoria during Barack Obama's presidential race. Speaking of black presidents, DJ T-Bone and the words to his beats, Black Prez, have been doing big things these past few years.

Oh, you want a list?
-E-40
-The New Boyz
-Warren G
-Talib Kweli
-Zion I
-Dead Prez
-Kids In The Hall
-UNI
-Strong Arm Steady
-Wiz Kalifah
-2 Live Crew
-Spice 1
-Tha Joker

Though that list could be followed by another one, listing all the genres of music of which T-Bone is both master and aficionado, the list would be unnecessary. Suffice it to say: if you have something in mine, the man will know it. And if you want to get cute, come up with something obscure, T-Bone may just surprise you by spinning it anyway.

If all of this sounds good, and of course it does he rolls with everything from the Numark digital turntables to a fog machine, plus BIG speakers and amps. Sometimes he even rolls with that man Black Prez, especially if he's hitting the Aggie, Hodi's Half Note, or the Fox.

Trying to pin down where T-Bone might be seem too stressful. Book the man and have him at your beck and call.

This is Travis Brown aka DJ T-Bone Scarpone. The hottest young DJ from Colorado that you may or may not have heard about. Why am I hot? Because I am the DJ for Black Prez the hottest young rapper from Colorado. I also have 7 years of experience, my own equipment and lights, a vast library and knowlegde of music and the unique talent to give the people what they wanna hear.

I have always loved music and I have always loved the devices that play music. When people ask me how long I have been a DJ I want to say the better part of 20 years, because to me being a DJ means knowing, loving and sharing music with others, playing music for people. I have always done that so I have always been a DJ. I usually tell people that I have been at it for six years though because in 2003 I first bought some DJ equipment and began to get paid to play music for people. I played music at high school basketball games in Estes Park, Colorado, my hometown. I made mixes for the athletes to warm up to, I announced the starting lineups, addressed the crowd and played the right songs at the right moments to help create an atmosphere for winning. After that I started to DJ at parties, community events, and school dances. I did two more seasons of basketball in Estes Park for both the boys and the girls’ teams. I even did a volleyball game once and a state swim meet years later that got me on Denver’s 9news. Next I began to work in my first bar, I played every Friday night for a summer being only 19 I was the only one in there not of legal age to drink, and I sucked. I got better though, after moving to Fort Collins I started to work in more bars and also started doing weddings, I’ve done about a dozen now. In April of 2007 I became a full time DJ. I have had the chance to work up north in Cheyenne where I have done numerous jobs including the 2008 Cheyenne Frontier Days. This winter in 2010 we went to South Dakota and packed out and rocked out a lil joint before heading down to Tucson and doing the same a few weeks later. I have traveled as far south as Colorado Springs for weddings, as far west as Grand Junction to open for a then unknown Wiz Khalifa in 2008, and Green River, Wyoming for concerts, Proms and graduation parties. . For the last two years I have been performing live with rapper Black Prez. Together we have opened for acts such as E-40, The New Boyz, Warren G, Talib Kweli, Zion I, Dead Prez, Kids In The Hall, UNI, Strong Arm Steady, Wiz Kalifah, 2 Live Crew, Spice 1 & Tha Joker. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Kal Penn, Adam Rodriguez and Eva Longoria during the 2008 Presidential Race while campaigning for Barack Obama and I have gotten to do so many diverse and interesting, sometimes meaningful things as a DJ. Most recently I’m getting back to my sporting event background as the official team DJ for Northern Colorado Rugby. I love all kinds of music from Snoop Dogg to Garth Brooks to Frank Sinatra to Kid Rock to Taylor Swift to Godsmack. I play mostly Hip Hop, but I usually can’t help but sprinkle in some of everything and anything I can get away with. I play hip hop, pop, top 40 dance, country, rock, alternative, underground hip hop & whatever else you may need or desire, but I don’t really spin techno, house or electronic type music. I use Numark CDX digital turntables, Serato Scratch Live, I have lights, a fog machine, big speakers, a big amp and a microphone that I know how to use. I have played at venues all over Colorado and had residencies at Kelli’s Lounge Zydecos, Drunken Monkey, Bear’s Sports Bar, Luscious Nectar and Suite 152. You might see me anywhere, anytime, maybe at A.F. Ray’s in Greeley. Maybe at Hodi’s Half Note, The Aggie or the Fox with my partner in rhyme, Black Prez.
