About
Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, a self taught drummer and musician from the age of 12, Ed Rollo has always had a keen ear for music composition and performance. Determined to improve his abilities by paying close attention to numerous drummers, DJ’s and producers to decipher their techniques by carefully listening and watching them play. This approach to absorbing all music around him has had a huge influence over his style, sound and teaching method - the fact that not all people learn best with a textbook.
Ed tries to understand what’s really going on behind any piece of music, connecting the dots between an individual musician, the band/group and the audience as a whole. Having learnt advanced Ableton Live techniques from registered trainers in Sydney as well as mentoring from world-recognised producers such as Simon Stokes, his love of electronic dance music has him exploring genres ranging from slow deep funky house grooves to bouncy tech house and even delving into the occasional glitchy-disco.
Major influences in his music career today are thanks to drummers such as Stewart Copeland, Danny Carrey, Carter Beauford and Darryn Farrugia who have given him a sound understanding of polyrhythm’s, syncopation and feel. Electronic music producers such as Booka Shade, Nick Curly, Opuio and Pleasurecraft give him inspiration to combine the percussive drive of acoustic elements with electronic sound synthesis in a way that helps you feel connected to the groove.
The past 10 years has seen him DJ and Drum in some of Sydney’s major clubs and venues, tour the east coast of Australia and work with singer/songwriters on production. Now based in Hong Kong, his focus is on performing more in the region, sharing his knowledge, starting a record label and launching his first EP.
