“Wara are young musical revolutionaries who simply ignore convention and bring together
Latin funk, Cuban timba, underground hip hop, leftfield jazz, rumba, reggae and dubstep...”
Lubi Jovanovic
The band emerged from the fertile SOAS music scene – a hot melting pot of identities, living
in London with backgrounds from all over the world: Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile,
Ghana, Congo, Spain and the UK. They’ve concocted a musical genre of their own with
strong Cuban roots. Taking influences from Timba, Afro Cuban styles and the new Cuban
funk-fusion bands, as well as other Latin and African rhythms and fusing them with a distinct
London sensibility.
With contagious, in-your-face vocals from Congolese-Argentinean lead Juanita Euka (niece of
legendary Congolese musician Franco), inspired keyboard flourishes from MD Eliane Correa,
MC Murmur quick on the rhymes and a super tight Latino / UK mix on the rhythm section -
their musical energy is palpable. And with a lyrically conscious approach, notably the defiant
immigration-law baiting ‘Flesh and Bone’, here is a band with an urgent voice that demands to
be heard.
Quotes:
"Wara is a group and a sound that could only exist in London in 2011. They pay their respects
to Cuba and the great history of that musical diaspora but they have earned their musical
chops and their lyrical concerns and their overall sound and feel is something completely of
the here and now. Wonderful."
Andy Wood (Director Como No & La Linea Festival)
"Wara represent the true sound of contemporary Latin London in the 21st century. With
musicians drawn from all corners of the world, their influences reflect the traditions of their
ancestors with the musical pulse of one of the world's megacities... a little bit Havana, a little
bit Shoreditch but 100% original pure Wara magic!"
Lubi Jovanovic (UK Latin DJ/Promoter/Journalist)
“The world may not change because of a song, but music can raise awareness - so if you
have a microphone and a stage then say something that matters; break the taboo.”
Eliane Correa (Wara, MD + keys)
‘The f***ing energy of these guys kept me enthralled…’
Sam Golden (Crack In The Road review of the Big Chill show)
Tracks on the EP:
‘Flesh and Bone’ is a sign of the times anthem that realises the next generation of Latin music
in London. The lyrics are politically fuelled; a passionate and active response to the tightening
of immigration laws under the coalition government.
‘Pretty Cliché’ gently mocks stereotypes rife in both England and Cuba; exploring the typical
relationships between people from the two countries. Musically it takes a journey from a lilting
Cumbia rhythm to a furious Timba style finale bridged by another verse from the band’s MC
Murmur; with MD Eliane Correa taking the lead vocal.
‘Caprichoso’ brings a heavy slab of dirty Afro-Latin funk, reminiscent of classic Cuban
band ‘Irakere’ with an ironic take on consumer values.
'Ojos Que No Ven' vibrates with stripped down acoustic soul and sees the band’s softer side
as it flows effortlessly from London to Havana in three and a half beautifully crafted minutes.
Upcoming Gigs: **11th Sept - The Mayor’s Thames Festival, Southbank (6pm)**
17th Sept – Hootananny, Brixton // 11th Nov – Bossaphonik, Oxford // More TBC…
