Kyoto Jazz Massive “Myster of Ages” Moonstarr Edits. Bridging Musical History from Canada to Panama to Japan
‘Mystery of Ages’ a lost classic composed by saxophone player and spiritual jazz funk legend Carlos Garnett in 1976. Reinterpreted by Japan’s dancefloor jazz purists Kyoto Jazz Massive. Remixed and reconfigured by Moonstarr.Now released on Public Transit Recordings, with proceeds going to Living Dreams, an organization supporting Japanese youth affected by the March 2011 earthquake.
‘Mystery of Ages’ was a personal challenge for Carlos back in 1976. A self-taught saxophonist, he pushed his boundaries in arrangement and scoring for a big band. That musical exploration became a journey posing big questions with a big sound, and captured the spirit of New York’s avant garde jazz funk community at that time. The song is a beautiful acknowledgement of our true naïveté about the universe, with Cheryl Alexander’s voice invoking questions about the meaning of human existence.
Inspired by the original, Kyoto Jazz Massive (KJM) covered the song with a fresh take on ideas and arrangements, featuring Shota Hishiyama on Rhodes, Kenichi Ikeda (Root Soul) on bass, and the incredible Bembe Segue on vocals (who does justice to Cheryl’s original takes).Somewhere along the way, Moonstarr was given a sneak preview into KJM’s creative process via a bootleg of an acapella version of sorts.Persuaded by friend and fellow producer Yosaku, Moonstarr remixed the cover with his signature staccato breaks and chopped loop arrangements.
With blessings from KJM and Carlos Garnett, PTR will release ‘Mystery of Ages – Moonstarr Remixes” on a limited 7inch in advance of KJM’s 2012 album release.
Proceeds of the project will be going to Tohoku Kids Project (Living Dreams in collaboration with Smile Kids Japan), upholding Carlos Garnett’s ethos of passing on positive knowledge to younger generations. Living Dreams gives kids hope though alternative support such as supplying musical instruments to orphanages in the affected regions of Japan’s devastating earthquake of 2011.
The only thing missing is Carlos’ sax. Stay tuned...
