SERENADE OF A SAILOR, the third album in Momo’s career (Marcelo Frota), confirms that, without doubt, he is one of the most interesting artists of the new generation of ‘multi-artists’ – Brazilian composers-musicians-interpretersproducers.
Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, by Marcelo with Caetano Malta, SERENADE OF A SAILOR is folk music with the sound of
the laments and praises of a certain somebody that does not fit in. His music is like a crystal that refracts the light and results in a new combination of paths and polarizations, each one with its own color.
The base of this sound is formed by the trio of Marcelo, the bass player Caetano Malta and the guitarist Regis Damasceno. It also includes the special participation of musicians such as Lucas Santtana (flute on “Solitude” and “Barco”), Domenico Lancellotti (percussion on “Shining Star” and drums on “Blue Bird”), Jam da Silva (percussion on “O Morro”) and Max Sette (trumpet on “Blue Bird” and “Serenade of a Sailor”), among many other friends and
musicians that collaborated in the making of the album. However, his strong point is the classical guitar, the companion of this sailor, who has the sea as the source of his inspiration and as an accomplice of his more confessional, visceral and passionate songs. Through the beautiful themes, with lyrics in Portuguese and in English, – all composed by Marcelo, with the exception of “O Morro” and “Madelaine”, both in partnership with Caetano Malta – Momo is influenced by the sound of the Brazilian popular music albums from the 1960s and 1970s, but looks to the future, combining modern Brazilian music to elements from the most diverse foreign influences.
SERENADE OF A SAILOR is capable of making us travel to the universe of this human being who, more than anything, needs to sing. And the singing of Momo increasingly broadens the potential of his reach, which was already evident from his first album “A Estética do Rabisco”, which, among other accolades, was chosen, in 2007, as one of the best albums of the year by the journalist Peter Margasak from the Chicago Reader. Since then, his work has been gaining admirers in the USA and some songs from his second CD “Buscador” were included on foreign radio station playlists.
Two years later, Momo was invited to play at the Chicago World Music Festival and began a tour of 12 North American states, performing almost 30 shows in 40 days.
Pimba, a great admirer and enthusiast of this talent, proudly embarks on this journey and brings yet another Momo
production to the public.
