During a hiatus from playing electric bass I decided to teach myself the essentials of how to dj. I started out terrible, using only my laptop, Virtual DJ lite, music pirated from youtube, and my 600 watt 4x10 electric bass speaker cab. As I got to be mediocre, people would hire me more and more often, and I generally tried to put that money back into dj equipment. I'm currently running Serato Itch with a Vestax VCI-300MKII, on two 1x18 subs and two 4x10 mid-range speaker cabs, plus a p/a system I use as a monitor. I also actually buy any music I don't download off soundcloud from itunes or beatport (SUPPORT YOUR ARTISTS!). I really respect DJ's who use vinyl and who use it well, but I'm happy faking it with my laptop and a midi controller so long as it doesn't break the bank and still gives me a musical outlet. As of last year I'm back in a band however, so djing has really taken a backseat for the moment.
