Need a gift for a gifted musician?
I started dj'ing around 1995 after regular visits to Geushky...the only club in Portsmouth that played 'proper' techno in the 90's.
It was my love of true minimal techno like Rob Hood, Jeff Mills and Dan Bell that spawned my email address and, subsequently, a name that I became associated with by anyone that knew me through the music (minimal boffin).
I was always fascinated with the idea of making my own music, having played the trumpet and violin through my youth, and started messing around with a few cheap pieces of gear when I went to University in Scotland around 1997. My very first track was a remix of Aztlan by The Aztec Mystic.
I stopped buying records around the time that Covert Records closed down in Brighton and, after a lengthy hiatus from anything musical, I started making music again when I moved to Australia in 2005.
I think that the music I make is a result of my past as much as anything else. I feel it's a lot more 'driving' than a great deal of the other tracks around that might be considered the same genre.
I LOVE the sound of grainy, moving, rhythmic pads and percussion and it never ceases to amaze me how much can be achieved with a laptop, a basic plugin synth with a few effects and your imagination.
