@thingstocome: i'm just using the sidechain in the compressor that comes with live, using the pre fader gain kick as input so everything doesn't get messed up with i start changing levels in the mix. on the "cars track" i remember putting the release time pretty hi in order to get the pumping in time with the beat and i don't think the threshold was too low. with the bass, i think i had the threshold much lower and the release time very fast so the bass just drops out when the kick is in. i'm just going from memory here (cause i'm at my dayjob right now), but i'm pretty sure that's how it was set up.
