Michele Stodart has temporarily hung up her
bass and recorded her debut solo album,
‘Wide-Eyed Crossing’, out October 22nd
on Keepsake Records.
Alongside touring the world, releasing
albums with double platinum sellers
The Magic Numbers and becoming a
mother, Michele has stolen every chance
she could get to take her songs into
the studio. Written and produced by Michele,
with a helping hand from engineer Phil Brown
(Talk Talk, Beth Gibbons, Joni Mitchell),
‘Wide-Eyed Crossing’ dishes up a veritable banquet
of delicacies on a debut that owes as much to
the strum of the acoustic guitar as it does to
the richness of the jazz vocal, noted
particularly on track ‘O Heart of Mine’.
Here are ten songs of full-bodied
country and blues, all wrapped up in a
gingham Americana bow. Opener
‘Here’s To Somehow’ is a rosy-cheeked
country romp through banjo and
slide guitar and first single ‘Foolish Love’,
out now, has already captured the hearts
of live audiences with its energy and grit.
It portrays the darker side of Michele’s
lyrical repertoire; “I hope you feel
this same pain one day soon,” she curses.
Other highlights include ‘List of Don’ts’
a soporific keyboard lullaby, childlike in its
simplicity, which floats away into a
brass-section reverie and
‘Invitation to the Blues’,a sturdy
emotive flutter that transforms into
a purring male female duet when
guest vocalist Conor O’Brien
(Villagers) steps up to the mic.
Michele and her touring band have already
taken to the stage supporting Villagers,
Alabama Shakes, Duke Special and
Slow Club, as well as selling out
residencies at London’s Boogaloo
and Betsey Trotwood in their own
right. Michele ended the summer with
her first headline solo slot at
LodeStar festival in Cambridge
and is set to embark on her first solo
UK tour.
