His music has variously been described as alternative, indie pop, goth and punk. He has been compared most often to Nick Cave, Joy Division and Leonard Cohen probably due to his deep resonant voice and the emotional intensity of his performance. He has also ben compared with the Go Betweens and The Triffids. Other comparisons with reference to the guitar based nature of his music have been made with Sonic Youth.

Michael Cullen released his first solo album,”Love Transmitter” in 2002. The album is a significant development in his work with a preference for tight pop arrangements and a softening of the heavy guitar which was a feature of his earlier recordings. “Love Transmitter” was produced by Tim Powles of Australian rock legends, The Church. It was recorded in Powles’ Spacejunk studio in Glebe, Sydney Australia.
In June 2011, Tomatrax Music Blog named “Love Transmitter” as the 18th best Australian album of all time, coming in behind The Saints “I’m Stranded” at number 17 and just ahead of “Sunnyboys” by the Sunnyboys.
Recently, Michael Cullen has begun work on a new album with Tim Powles at Spacejunk III and Studios 301 in Sydney. These new recordings will be released in 2012.
