Artificial Intelligence have been pushing the D&B envelope for nearly a decade with a relentless succession of class-A tracks on some of the scene’s most respected labels. Reaching a vast drum & bass sized grip from London to Kazakhstan, the stalwarts of the scene team up with an emerging but prolific talent, Command Strange, to turn out the latest single on Metalheadz’ premium platinum imprint.
Drawing for former Roll Deep member and grime MC Jamakabi on the vocals, Artificial Intelligence & Command Strange craft a rolling, epic backdrop for him to roll across effortlessly. With tension-building bars and cavernous bass growls ‘Mad One’ takes you on a journey into the deeper and darker side of drum & bass, without falling victim to cliché. And as the track builds and grows Jamakabi urges you forward with the immortal prose “I’m on a mad one” while all around the beats offer thunderous applause and the bass threatens to blow speakers all around you.
Meanwhile ‘Broken Grounds’ grabs you by the hand and drags you even further down the rabbit hole. Winding, grinding synths pull and suck you in as oxygen-less atmospheres swirl around you before pummelling you with endless bass notes. With a different approach to arrangement and a sound set that’s from another world, this track is a homage to the greatest journey in human history; a reflection of the pioneering spirit that’s found in every creative endeavour. This track is a rocket-powered beast headed straight for the dance floor.
Once again Goldie and the Metalheadz team’s A&R prowess rises to the fore as ‘Mad One’ and ‘Broken Grounds’ move the Metalheadz mythos forward in all the right ways, taking in different inspirations and blending them into something that’s effortlessly platinum.
