Mbug is a veteran of Melbourne underground dance music community having been performing since 1997 when he played his first show at the infamous Cybertrek rave at Melbourne uni. Preferring to be heard not scene Mbug stays away from the latest dubmicropsyorgyhousenextbig thing genre focusing on weaving together a complex dance floor narrative that engages on an emotional and cerebral level.
Fluidly crossing genres and engaging dancers on an ever building, uplifting journey through techno, minimal, electro, progressive, trance and tribal sounds. Mbug performaces are all about a symbiosis between dj and dancer the artist as a mirror reflecting, amplifying and guiding the dance floor experience and channelling the crowd’s energy into unified moments of delight.
Over the years Mbug has held residencies at seminal Melbourne club nights such as Club Filter, Tectronic, Virus and Protozoa as well as guest slots at Teriyaki, Centrifugal, Flirt, More Bass, Lectroland, Yeah Fuck Yeah, Unstable, Bitch Engine and Synchronicity and played at large events such as Frantic, Earthcore Carnival and Collision as well as played on the bill with internationals such as Jasper Dhalback and more recently at intimate Bush parties like Festivus and Ooh Yeah NYE.
As well as his DJ work Mbug is very much involved in promoting dance music in Melbourne. In 1999 he joined forces with Susan Bird to start Messy Creations. The aim of Messy Creations is to create a party collective that organise quality grass-roots dance events with a focus on high levels of production, promoting young local artists, DJs and musicians. Now coming into its 11th year Messy Creations has organised over 40 parties in warehouses, forests, mansions, under bridges and other unique venues. It is one of Melbourne’s longest running and respected party crews.
