As we drove away from 12 Pines, the most energetic acoustic show I have ever played, I kept seeing in my mind two young people, cars packed full, pulling out of their driveways, leaving home to become a Bennie and a Johnnie for the first time. I got out a note pad and started writing their story, which of course was a love story. I recorded the song in my home the next day. I thought it would be make a nice thank you for a memorable night.

I love the recurring theme of the “backseat” – my backseat contained all my personal belongings as I moved back and forth during my time at St Bens. And now my backseat holds my most precious - 2 young boys that I share with my Johnnie. Our time at St Bens /St Johns was the springboard for our entire life together.

Mat, Your wonderful new song was shared with the Twin Cities at 7:45 am today on Cities 97.
The announcers (one included Keri Noble) raved about the beauty of the song and demanded it be performed at the Basilica Block Party.

My Bennie of 21 years is going in for breast cancer surgery next Wed. Our daughter played this for us on the way to the Twins game last Friday to "get our minds off of this" We cried all the way in. Hauntingly accurate.

Beautiful song and melody. We loved the lyrics, this song spoke volumes of memories as a Bennie/Johnnie couple married for 34 years. Four of our seven children have followed our footsteps in attending these great schools. Thank you for sharing - hope it makes it to the top of the charts! God bless.

- Students at the College of Saint Benedict are fondly referred to as Bennies; students of Saint John's University, Johnnies.
- Yep, we're in Minnesota!
- We're right on hwy 94. so (almost) EVERYONE takes hwy 94 to school.
- Sal's is a popular bar in Saint Joseph, MN, where CSB is.
- Lake Sagatagan is one of several lakes on the SJU campus.
- Bells- refers to the bells on famous Abbey Church's bell banner.
