Percussa in Belgium released a new music production tool called Improvisor in 2011. I downloaded it used to to produce a this song. I was so excited by the results I just had to release this as a single for others to enjoy. I also hear that it's the first piece to be released using this technology.

    Composer Notes

In "Primeval 01" I transport you to a primitive place. I use hand crafted synthetic sounds (subtractive and additive synthesis) to create stange tones, textures. and rhythms which give you a sense of how primal this world. Fast note-runs, and radical tempo changes will creep you out. Remember to look under your bead tonight before turning in :^) I numbered the song "01" because I might do more pieces from this world.

    Produciton Notes

I used Improviser to program original notes, velocities, and semitones into patterns. I then performed with these patterns interactively using Percussa's AudioCubes controllers. In other words it's a generative improvization based on notes I programmed. I routed four streams of note patterns into discrete MIDI channels which were routed to four virtual synthesizers. I used Waldorf Largo, and three instances of Image-Line's Harmless. Every patch was hand crafted from INIT. The synthesizers were hosted out of Ableton Live which was used to record all the incoming data which I then further manipulated prior to producing the final song.

Very nice work Mark. I loved the clustering of notes and changes in timing. Very effective.

@kongbalong: Thanks! All the reverb is coming from buil-in FX in each instance of Largo and Harmless. Since this is mostly Harmless a lot of the atmosphere is coming from it's reverb, delay and compressor. By the way, I have some free patches for Harmless here http://patchlab.modulatethis.com/2010/12/modulate-this-01-presets-for-image-line-harmless.html.

@MarkMosher: Interesting. I haven't tried that synth yet so not so familiar with it's architecture. This Improviser sounds like it possesses a lot of creative potential. Look fwd to hearing more of what it can do :)

@Lux_Seeker: Thanks!! Yeah I really enjoyed arranging this piece so there would be a more than then sum of the parts result - especially during the really fast tempos.

This is very good electronic music. It is much more like modern classical music than electronica. The sound reminded me a bit of Xenakis. I love the direction you are going in.

@JAnderson: All the plucked and metalic sounds are coming from multiple instances of Image-Line's Harmless. It's kind of a subtractive take on addiditve. Those are all programmed from INIT

Crazy twisted design, Mark... Sounds like a new kind of plucked instrument in some places! What instrument is this anyway? :)
