MARK NORTHFIELD is a pianist and singer/songwriter from Berkshire, England. He makes quirky, intelligent and occasionally theatrical arty pop stuff, often collaborating with vocalists drawn from a variety of genres. Broadly speaking, unpigeonholable.
Comparisons? Think the otherness of Kate Bush, the precision of Neils Tennant and Hannon, the balls of Rufus Wainwright and the wonder of Pink Martini, all balanced out by a gloomy sliver of Radiohead.
His first official release, 'Ascendant', was a dark and haunted neo-classical song-cycle, with linking sections between songs anticipating and echoing musical themes heard elsewhere on the album. Staff reviewer Adam Downer at Sputnikmusic placed Ascendant in his Top 20 of 2008 and Top 100 of the decade. Indie music site Bluesbunny called it 'a Tim Burton movie for the ears...'
Ascendant can be heard in its entirety on both Bandcamp (see link above) and Spotify, and is available as both a download and physical CD (the latter through Bandcamp, CD Baby or Rough Trade). Seven of the nine tracks are here on Soundcloud.
The follow-up album 'Alterations' will be released in the spring of 2012. It consists of five almost-pop songs transformed into five almost-classical songs. It's an ambitious and varied work, running the gamut from naggingly catchy philosophical disco (The Death Of Copyright) to anthemic pop rock (Nothing Impossible), messed-up apocalyptic cabaret (The Up Shit Creek Blues), soaring string-laden theatrical climaxes (Paradise By Numbers) and gypsy/flamenco fuelled wonderment (Aurora). The connections between the two halves bind it all together in subtle and surprising ways.
A first taster from Alterations, 'The Death Of Copyright' EP, was released in mid 2011. Available from all good online stores, the extra tracks include an atmospheric stripped down version of ABBA's understated masterpiece, The Day Before You Came, along with the counterpart track to The Death Of Copyright from Alterations: The Forecaster. This latter track was a finalist in the Open category of the UK Songwriting Contest 2011.

The 'Nothing Impossible' EP will be digitally released in January, and will include two new songs, along with the 'almost-classical' counterpart to Nothing Impossible from Alterations, the song Reminders, Remind.
Also 'new' in 2012, Mark's previously unreleased 2002 album Anachronisms will finally be given a digital release. (Better late than never etc.) 6 of the 11 tracks can now be heard here on Soundcloud.
