About

In terms of musical ferocity; Espiritu Invisible stands at its core. His songs could be described as unparallel chthonic cuts that march between the transcendent and the forgotten (and the ghosts). María y José is simply, a chillwave and nostalgic installment of pop music. The kind of assorted dream that is warped and wrapped through personal approach; Jimenez’s vision is wonderfully conflictive, breezy, and affectionate. An album that feeds from informality rather than practicing form. It sets up its dynamics to assimilate structure; notice the “este album no fue masterizado” hint on the album’s credits. If you practice music form it will be as hard to enjoy as Neon Indian’s Psychic Chasms, but if you instead, feel the form, get ready for an extraordinary album. From the refreshing militant sound to its aesthetics, this is a tremendous achievement. CLUB FONOGRAMA

REVISTA 69

This is what happens when a true innovator like María y José makes music. A whole new world is constructed from layers of sounds and beats, and it challenges the way you listen to and experience music. Espíritu Invisible definitely did this, and, though in five short songs it is impossible to achieve the same magic, the undeniably sexy Kibosé EP continues this trajectory with unabashed lust that engulfs you and evokes an otherworldly beach party that you’ll never want to leave. I’m not sure what the proper term for this type of music is but I’m assuming it’s something along the lines of Cumbiatron or Chucuteca? Maybe? No se. Anyway, Maria Y Jose or Antonio Jiménez and Peluza Puente from Tijuana Mexico call it “Maravilloso sonido tropical” and it really is. It’s latin, bassy, housey, and “Tropicool”. I’ve been rocking their single “Kibose” at clubs lately and people really seem to get down to it. I don’t see any US show dates on their website yet, but hopefully people will catch on to them soon. NIGHTDRIVE

MOUSTACHE MOVEMENT

Maria y Jose from Tijuana has just dropped another killer release: the Kibosé/Cocobass EP. Of the many ideas threatening to explode out of their earlier lo-fi pop experimentations, arrives this full-on guarachero cumbia assault – and Tijuana just can’t stop making me happy! SCATTERBLOG
