Swiss Brazil Connection.
Premiere performance of Conversationl Geometry with Dirk Amrein, Posaune, Maurizio Grandinetti, Gitarrre, Jürg Henneberger, Klavier
Recorded by DRS2 Swiss Radio
Aufnahme Gare du Nord Basel, 17. Dezember 2010
As the title suggests, conversational Geometry is a conversation between three voices; guitar, trombone and piano. This conversation is sometimes delicate and at other times robust and confrontational presenting complex musical layers in constantly changing relationships. The piece is formed by bringing together the music from three other pieces of mine and 'mashing' them together. This process is not as arbitrary as it may sound; all the material brought together comes from pieces that stem originally from the same material, so the links are deeply embedded within them. These links become apparent after listening to the music several times as its complex interweaving of lines can (purposely) obscure these relationships rather like several people talking about the same topic at once but not actually talking to each other.
As explaned in previous interviews:
"New works are also originated by recycling existing pieces of music through changing contexts and relationships, transforming this material into something quite new. Many of the acoustic pieces I write find their starting point from within other pieces of music I’ve already written.
I am fascinated how altered contexts can radically redefine the way musical material feels and sounds. Transplanting different layers, voices or strands of music from one piece to another, altering tempi and dynamics, transposing, inverting, and then letting those strands sound out together; all of these methods fascinate me.
Like the music, my paintings are often produced in series, each painting being influenced by the former. Sometimes I will paint two or three pictures at the same time, each sharing the same starting point, layers and processes until something happens to make me want to separate them and explore them in different ways. In music, the recycling of material ensures that there is a ‘genetic’ connection between all the works – sometimes up to 15 individual pieces may be connected in this way. They are like sons and daughters, cousins, five times removed. With this ‘genetic’ material comes history, characteristics and content. In music, as with people, the way this genetic material is ‘lived out’ determines the character and make-up of the person or piece. This can lead to very individual outcomes."

@iosu vakerizzo: Ah, I see - well, I don't have much currently available for download and nothing really available on CD - it proved too much effort to make hard copies of everything so I went over to downloads, not the same, I know, but my music is not sufficiently commercial to merit production of hard copy CDs - there will be more of my music for download in the future as I have several albums in the pipeline but they take time to process. At the moment there is only this http://www.amazon.co.uk/marc-yeats/s/qid=1302428816/ref=sr_nr_seeall_2?ie=UTF8&keywords=marc%20yeats&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amarc%20yeats%2Ci%3Adigital-music which may or may not be what you're looking for. Sorry I haven't got more to offer! The Cerberus cerberus (2009) by Marc Yeats and Ascension ascension (2010) by Marc Yeats tracks from the 'CERBERUS' album are available to listen to on here if you want to get to know them first and in full!
And it was a pleasure to listen to your work! - iosu vakerizzo

@Marc Yeats: Sorry Marc, I probably didn't explain myself properly, I meant, can I get your music on a CD? or an mp3 download? or any such format so I can listen to it in the car or wherever I go?
Also I've just seen you favourited one of my tracks, thanks for that, it's an honor to be favourited by a musician of such a skill as yourself! - Marc Yeats

@iosu vakerizzo: I have a number of scores in PDF format and am happy to share these if they are just for study purposes. For performance, scores and parts are available for purchase, again in PDF format. If you have any particular requests for pieces you can hear on Soundcloud (except large orchestral pieces) and they are in notated, score form for live performance, please send me a private message with your contact details and I'll see what i can do. I hope this answers your question. Good to meet. Thank you!

@iosu vakerizzo: I'm very pleased you found me - thank you for looking, I know it can be difficult to find what you are looking for on here at times as the classification of music is not so accurate and some musicians use the most inappropriate terms to describe their work!

How would I go about obtaining a copy of this piece? Or any of your work for that matter.

This is really great! Nice to find someone making good music on soundcloud. I typed "classical avant-garde" and most of what i got back was techno, which I can't stand. You sir are an island in an ocean of garbage.

@Peter Quin: You're right! My instrumental music is never easy to perform - it takes great technical ability, virtuosity and emotional insight to pull off. I do write songs too, pieces for the the voice, and these can be very demanding too. Unfortunately I don't have any of my songs on soundcloud at this moment in time.

Thanks for listening and all the comments - appreciate it! And yes, you're right, there are many layers of activity and cross reference, some of which are still revealing themselves to me! They gave a great performance of what is a very virtuosic work and did especially well when you think of those complex rhythms without a conductor! Anyway, much appreciated M x

A great finish! This is certainly a piece that requires more than one listen, although I can certainly appreciate the structure of the work and the intricacy of the different lines. I love how you're always able to accomplish so much with only three instruments -- there's a lot of really complex texture that gives it such a full ensemble feel. There's more to the music than first meets the ear, and I think that it's delightfully unique when you can enjoy something once, and then keep finding new things as you listen to it again. Thanks for sharing - great recording and great work!
