MAKALA / DJ MAKALA

Mikel Unzurrunzaga Schmitz better known as Makala and/or DJ Makala, based in Donostia - San Sebastián (Basque Country, Europe); working since two decades as Club & Radio DJ, is also a versatil musician, producer & remixer.

He has released several vinyls & records for labels such as Novophonic, Metak, Uptight International, Achiliboots & Lovemonk. Also some remixes & tracks for compilations in labels such as UrbanWorld (Denmark), Movimientos (UK), Agogo (Germany), Freshly Squeezed (UK), Rip Curl (Japan), High Note (Taiwan), Lola’s World (Germany), Wagram (France), …

Makala has performed as DJ in clubs & venues of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Nederland, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, USA,… and some festivals such as Sonar 2000 (Barcelona), Porto 2001 "European Capital of Culture" (Porto, Portugal), Popkomm 2002 (Köln, Germany), Dranouter Festival 2009 (West Flanders, Belgium), Paulusfeesten 2010 & 2012 (Oostende, Belgium), Jazzaldia (Donostia-San Sebastián, Basque Country),...

Since 2005, he hosts his own weekly Boom Shaka Laka radio show in Radio Gaztea (Basque Public Broadcast Radio TV Media Group, EITB).

Since 2008, he organizes monthly the Global Funk Parties with his partner Arka in main Basque cities such as Bilbao, Vitoria & San Sebastian, having performed in clubs, venues & festivals with guests artists such as Alice Russell & TM Juke (UK), Nickodemus (USA), Haaksmann & Haaksmann (Germany), Captain Planet (USA), Dusty "Jazz&Milk" (Germany), Pete "Jelly Jazz" Isaac (UK), Sweet Vandals (Madrid), Dubben (Germany), Txarly Brown (Barcelona), DJ Farrapo (Italy), Shantisan (Austria), DJ Floro (Spain),…to name a few.

Makala's music is very eclectic, mainly full of hot Caribbean & Tropical sounds, always a great mixture of classic & modern musical selections coming from different styles like Latin, Boogaloo, Cumbia, Gipsy Barcelona Rumba, Afro, Soul, Funk, Swing, Jazz, Calypso, Jamaican Ska & Dub. In short: tons of dance and fun, Happy Sound!

Starting from Spring 2012, Makala strikes again with his "Unexpected Tapas Dj Tour powered by BENCH", playing in cities such as Amsterdam, New York, Paris, London, Barcelona, Berlin, Brugge,… and of course in Basque cities such as Donostia, Bilbao, Gasteiz & Pamplona.
