Michael has dabbled with music from an early age, playing piano, keyboards and bass in various bands since the early 90’s. Since getting into the production side of things over 15 years ago, he has built a solid catalogue of independent releases.
Michael played bass in various "shoegazer" bands in the mid-nineties, primarily Halcyon Days and Mos Eisley.
He was a founding member of Supaphatass in 1997, playing live gigs around Adelaide and outputting independent releases (including a full length album, EPs and a 12") for nearly 10 years.
He was nominated for "Most Outstanding Keyboard Player" in the 2001 South Australian Music Industry Awards and has written music for television + film.
Most recently, he was a finalist in the 2011 Fringe Spin Off DJ Battle.
Here’s what the reviewers + judges had to say about his live set at the Spin Off;
“M-13 opened the night with his dark disco tek, which incorporated many original productions for the former member of Supaphatass.”
“He had a really strong, unique sound that sets him apart from other DJs.”
“The fact that he creates his own sounds was a drawcard and I thought it was good for Spin DJ to have someone of his style for a change, and seeing him make his own stuff on the night proved his spot in the finals.”
M-Thirteen currently DJs regularly at Dragonfly on Saturday nights and produces all sorts of sounds in his home studio.
M-Thirteen also plays live using hardware instruments, which is always interesting to the synth trainspotters out there. His current live set-up fluctuates around an Elektron Machinedrum, Nord Micro Modular, Roland SH-101 (red), Korg R3, Korg Kaos Pad and a Boss SP-202 sampler, all running through a small Mackie mixer or 12-channel Allen + Heath mixer. On rare occasions, he will drag his beastly Roland Jupiter-8 to a gig.
He sometimes plays a hybrid DJ/live set, alternating between the decks and the instruments.
