Need a gift for a gifted musician?
Originally from London, UK, I've now made Auckland, New Zealand my home.
I started Djing when I was supposed to be a student in the early 90's. My first 'big' gigs in were Stoke on Trent, UK alongside Kelvin Andrews at 'Sure is Pure', going under the name of 'The Michael Cained Experience'.
Back in the big smoke I had a residency for a few years at the legendary "Mudd Club" at Bagleys, run by infamous UK promoter Phillip Salon. Any kiwi who has spent time in the UK will probably have gotten messed up there once or twice.
I then ran a popular little night called 'Damn Right' with Freestyle records' 'Sleeve' (of 'Hipness' fame) in London's Brick lane - it was always a full on Block Party Funk and Old school Hip hop night.
"Damn Right" made the jump to New Zealand, and ran for six months during summer 2008. It will be returning soon when we've found a good home !
I Started producing my own stuff in 2002, and hooked up with Sleeve to put out some tunes on Adrian Gibson's Freestyle Records. "So Fine" sold out on vinyl, after being picked up and championed by Sir Norman Jay himself, who dropped it as his 'last tune' throughout summer 05 at The Big Chill, Notting Hill Carnival and the festival circuit...
So Fine was then released on "Norman Jays - Good Times 25th Anniversary Edition" alongside Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Masters at work and NZ's own Recloose, and included on Freestyles 'Single Minded' compilation. The flip "Kick It" can be found on Freestyle's "Collected Singles 8".
I've Been in NZ for nearly 5 years now. I currently co-host "Hip Hop Underground" on New Zealand's very own GeorgeFM with local legend 'Stormin Norman'. The show airs on Sunday nights from 10pm-12am, or breakfast for most of my old mates listening online in the UK. You can catch the show at http://www.georgefm.co.nz
