Space Ranger - What About The Magnetic Fields?

12 tracks, 1.04.25 Lovemonk with Scup on November 30, 2010 15:26

After three brilliant 12”s and a bunch of edits that drew the attention of DJs and dancefloors worldwide, played out by Mylo and picked by Chris Baio (Vampire Weekend) as a Pitchfork best of 2010, this is the eagerly awaited debut album of German trio Space Ranger. Italo influences, lustful synths, suggestive vocals, psychedelic pop, sultry electronic layers, heavy beats and fat bass lines: all these elements are masterly combined in this album shaping the soundtrack of a 21st century discothèque odyssey.

Most of the time, talking about a club song means talking about peak-time stuff. The secret life of a club takes place on the dancefloor, but also in all the hidden places inside a venue and during the whole night, not only when the floor is packed with sweaty and luscious dancers, in fact the most interesting games take place before and after that.

This album is the perfect soundtrack for the complete discothèque experience. Suggestive warm-up melodies, searching moments, hot love stories, dancefloor stormers, aftermath tunes, soothing vibes… but most of all hedonistic music.

The album features the vocal skills of Captn K of Picnic Records fame on Nightmoves and Plastic Romance, adding an irresistible indie disco twist to both. Aromabar and Pollard Barrier collaborate as well, on Nothing’s Wrong, a beautiful and deep, deep, deep cut. The Revenge adds that in your face feel that is always in his productions. By the way, the album features some remixes because it’s 2011 and the trio thought it would benefit the record and well, it certainly does. Italian disco meisters Ajello leave their unique footprint with a Vocal approach to Shave Me I’m Famous and Rayko does his thing with Superstring, Ace as usual.

This is a record that connects with the times when club music meant just that: “music played loud in a club”, like the early heroes used to do way back. When a DJ session included more than one style, more than one tempo, when it was just a work of love. This is it, but adding 21st century sounds deeply rooted in soul.

Background info:

The trio based in Stuttgart has a wide experience and an unlimited love for music. The three members of the band have been producing music and spinning records for a while now. They started their DJ career in late 80s/ early 90s and they are strongly influenced by the deep club sound of those days. Combining sophisticated production skills, a huge range of analogue equipment and a long-term experience of what’s working on dancefloors around the world they know how to move the crowds. Using samples taken from a huge collection of old-school dance, disco and soul records they create the distinctive and sophisticated house and disco sound of today. Knowledge is power and Space Ranger is a powerful fresh force addressing the discerning dancefloors.

Flo, Rino and Felix were ¾ of acclaimed production and DJ team Dublex Inc. They played a key role in the underground club scene of the early noughties. The quartet got their biggest hit back in 2001 with “Tango Forte”, which later turned them into co-producers of Sugababe’s hit “Round Round”. Since then they have done more DJ gigs than your doctor would recommend. In the studio they’ve done a string of remixes for the likes of Kool and The Gang or Kurtis Blow, to name but a few.

Space is the place.
