About
Canary (Melbourne) brings together an unorthodox bunch of musicians under the innovative eye of singer-songwriter Matthew Kenneally. The band has already developed a reputation as an engaging live act, at times lush and energetic and at others introspective and personal. They perform with a rare kind of honesty to mesmerizing effect. They have spent the majority of 2010 focusing on their exciting debut album “Dear Universe” released in November 2011.
Drawing on a colourful spectrum of musical influences, Canary's music is rich, imaginative and unabashedly emotive. Vibrant trumpet lines, dexterous beatboxing, lyrical bass riffs and brash guitar provide the underscore for Matt's from-the-heart lyrics.
Dear Universe
Having spent the good part of 2010 recording at various spare rooms across Melbourne and Geelong, and a barn in Nagambie, the boys are keen to share the fruits of their efforts with anyone who has time to listen. Mixed by talented bassist and sound engineer Isaac Barter, the album has a rich sound, with many tracks featuring lush string arrangements and vocal harmonies, and incorporating many “left-of-centre” instruments, and synths. Dear Universe brings together competing themes, of self-denial and self-affirmation. Moving between the warmth of layered sounds to lyrical catharsis, the songs are expressed in their own space. Self-aware and inventive, the result is an album as enthralling musically as it is thematically diverse and emotionally poignant. A rewarding listen.
