For over a year we are successfully running a unique monthly night in Berlin:

DubDerGutenHoffnung - (in english: DubOfGoodHope) born in the summer of 2011 - is a series of events that promotes bass music - Dubstep, Rootzstep, Steppaz, Dub, Jungle. By now It has advanced to be a unique night for insiders within the Berlin bass massive. A very special line up, chosen with great care, of international artists, an entrance fee that is more than fair and good sound quality are the foundation and together with the music itself it has always provided a very special vibe. At a DubDerGutenHoffnung night conscious music and heavy skanking are guaranteed - positive vibez all around! In contrast to the rest of the mostly divided bass music scene (one the one hand Reggae / Dancehall headz and the Roots / Dub massive, on the other hand heavily electronic music influenced, deep or brostep-like dubstep events) people have noticed here that a vast variety of music among those lines can be fused and still contain a strong "message".

The crew around DubDerGutenHoffnung was originally formed by the DJs/Producers/Promoters Ras Lion (GER/UK), Mio Mindsteppa (GER), Jimi Handtrix (USA/GER) and Darkwing Dub (AT) and has gained growth and versatility ever-since. New members on board include DJs Mr. Narci (GER), FauN (GER) and Freytakt (GER) as well as the multilingual MCs/Singers Kali Green (LS/GER) and konTa (GER). Out of pure love for music, the major goal is to always bring the best for the people and so they have worked with some of the top ranking artists. Our crew members have since played shows all over the globe from Berlin to London to Mexico City to San Francisco to Graz and beyond. A very special moment being Spring 2012 during which they organized a tour through Germany and Austria and together with ROOMMATE (Argon | Full Melt | Hollow Point | USA) dubbed out cities like Munich, Dresden, Salzburg and Graz. Festival appearances included Fusion Festival, Lion Dub Festival and Zwischenraum Festival.

Right in the time of the anniversary celebration, the "Dub Der Guten Hoffnung EP" - a collaboration between Roommate (USA), Ras Lion (GER/UK), and Darkwing Dub (AT) - was released on Avocaudio. The 4 Tracks - produced during the European tour together with Roommate - somehow represent the concept behind DubDerGutenHoffnung: positive vibes, but still with a message. Exclusive material from the golden times of jamaican musical history, treasures from the roots and foundation era were treated in a dubwise fashion and new riddims were built. One can hear the voices of the vocal trio Foundation and Jack Ruby, as well as the teachings of a Rasta elder in the mountains of the Caribbean Islands in a fresh context but still with the same amount of power.

The Lions don't rest and so they keep on working on new material, new ideas and new projects.
Their own soundsystem is getting some nice update and is already been heard (Open Air) in different places all over Berlin and surrounding. Besides this the first vinyls are pressed and in nightly recording sessions a lot of Lion material is recorded. So watch out…

Darkwing Dub is a DJ, producer and promoter from Graz and one of the founding members of the “Dub der guten Hoffnung” event series in Berlin. He is also responsible for all the great artworks and designs surrounding the Lion’s Den and DubDerGutenHoffnung.

His sound gives tribute to all kind of bass music. The sets he plays are influenced by a lot of stuff coming from this little caribbean island, all kind of funky stuff and also the more deep and dark things. So Darkwings’s sound ranges from dub and dubstep to jungle and drum and bass to breakbeat and funk.

Over the past several years, Jimi Handtrix has become a stronghold of Berlin’s vibrant club scene, steadily building up a solid reputation as a passionate musical activist, promoter and deejay. Beginning his musical journey during the golden age of the mid-90s, he soon discovered the Jamaican soundsystem culture at  YAAM, and found himself deeply rooted in the Reggae / Dub scene. It was here, on one fateful night, that he would discover the sound of Jungle / Drum & Bass.

From this point on, he began to develop an immense passion for the rolling basslines and souped-up breakbeats which would soon come to define his musical calling. Before long he was playing regular shows throughout the city, developing close ties with various promoters, deejays and crews, most notably “Dub der guten Hoffnung”, with whom he helped shape a unique club night at Subland, paying tribute to dub influenced electronic dance music.

“…an energetic whirlwind, fingers meticulously moving from turntable to mixer in a constant state of flux, seamlessly blending sounds and creating a unique musical journey with every performance.”

As of late he’s been gaining a lot of international exposure, having recently toured with the likes of Heist and SFR, including a one month European tour with US dubstep pioneer Roommate of Babylon System. Currently he’s touring North America, having already graced the stages in Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco, Mexico City, Lake Atitlan & Cosmic Convergence in Guatemala.

FauN is a Dj and Organiser based in Berlin and Cairo. As Founder of the “Exodus Project”, which is based in Cairo, he tries to combine political work with culture and art. Understanding music as an universal language we work together with many artists all over the world to create special events.

Also working together with the Dub Der Guten Hoffnung Crew on the very special dubstep night in Berlin, which takes part @ Subland once a month.

* Who is konTa – the musical character? Tell di people something about yur musical journey.
 
Well, konTa the musical character is on a journey receiving his power from various kinds of music since early childhood. Now he is mostly spreading his message on Instrumentals that come out of the Reggae, Dub, HipHop, Jungle or Dubstep movement.
It is all about sharing, receiving and giving, energy, knowledge, emotions, experience – a kind of a vibe. Music is part of humanity and therefor part of every human being, it is about upliftment, so konTa is a musical misson to uplift the people.
I love all these styles of music, they give me the possibility to express myself – lyricalwise in a flow, able to carry a certain energy.
 
* Why did yu pick up on writing & singing?

Well I really kind of had a particular reason to start, to let’s say grab the mic. It was the development that I was witnessing around me. Especially in Hip Hop, in the so-called ‘underground scene’ as well as on the ‘upper’ mainstream level, particularly in Germany, where I grew up and so that’s what I was closest to.
In my neighbourhood, my surrounding, my City, in other places, on VIVA, MTV, later on the net… When I first got into contact with Hip Hop, I felt that there was something in the music, something very powerful. It was bringing a new vibe, rappers where pointing their fingers on important issues that had been always been tried to get covered up.
Rappers where asking questions, spreading news on wild energetic instrumentals. But with the commercialization a big part of the whole thing turned dumb. Knaan had a very nice line about it in his track SOMALIA where he says:
“A lot of mainstream rappers are yappin about yappin a lot of underground guyz are rappin about rappin.”
And that is basically what the main image, the face of Hip Hop was turned into.
So I was kind of upset about all these guys that where misusing Hip Hop from how I saw it. So I started to also blame myself. I was thinking: “How can you blame all those guys, when you don’t even know how to kick a single line?”
So I startet writing…
