Lil Silva's arrival in dance music in late 2008 was as explosive as one of his club-rattling drops.
Here was an 18-year-old from Bedford making music with all the minimal machine funk of Chicago’s Trax label, the aggression of early grime, a tropical resonance with soca and the sonic invention of The Neptunes.
His debut 12”, with the echoed bongo hits of 'Seasons' and 'Funky Flex' on the flip defined the early moments of UK Funky. The next white label blended proto-grime tune ‘Pulse X’ with his own ‘Funky Flex’, recreating it as a founding tune of UK Funky.
The productions crossed genres with support from Hyperdub’s Kode9 and Berlin’s Modeselektor. In 2010 Lil Silva released the ‘Night Skankers’ EP on Night Slugs. 2011 saw the ‘Patience EP’ come out on rising label Good Years.
