2012 SoundCloud Fellowship - 15 ... Track the SoundCloud Fellowship. Our 15 Fellows will post their sounds here as they work on their sound projects.
At a series of “must-see” spots in Detroit, visitors will be able to engage in an audio tour using their mobile phones. Tour info may include vox of local residents, archival or newly recorded actualities from pertinent people, and possibly historical quotes read by an actor (unless these end up being too cheesy). The tone will strive to be conversational and fresh (hopefully without coming off as trying too hard) instead of sounding more traditional and, well, fit for a museum. There will be a contest where Detroiters can apply to narrate one or more pieces and receive a modest payment for doing so. People will be also able to interact with the Detroit Mobile Audio Tour by submitting content. They will be able to upload new audio by using the SoundCloud App, leaving a voicemail, or sending a written comment. Participants will be encouraged to answer such questions as, “What else is interesting about this site?” “What’s happening right now?” “And what did we get wrong?” This additional content may be used to create feature audio stories or sound installations down the line. It will also serve as a written and audio record of how some of these sites may develop over time. Follow me @HerIcebergRadio or @DetroitLaura. Listen to the stories I’ve produced for Detroit Public Radio. Also check out my website and my bio.

Did you read this section while listening to the drumbeat? Rhythmically on point! Adds nice movement.

Interesting idea. I lived and worked in Detroit for many years and have since left. The beginning of last century, my great grandfather had a watch store about 1/4 mile from Belle Isle and grandfather had a farm on the edge of the city limits near 7 mile and Gratiot. I look forward to your postings.

This is such a great idea!Mmakes me want to go to Detroit and do the tour (and I've never really had an urge to go to Detroit). Good luck on the Fellowship!

@The New York Crimes: Glad you like the project idea. Hopefully it will be up by the time you come to visit. And you should come, few cities are as interesting to visit as Detroit right now.

@Rachel Delante: There will definitely be a website where all the sites will be listed. Online there will be additional information about the best times to visit each site and nearby attractions as recommended by a local guidebook project, Belle Isle to 8 Mile. And yep, as we get more locations with mobile audio capabilities, I'd like the website to also show maps of potential walking/biking tours of the sites.

This is an awesome idea!
So easy to use - I never want to do official tours when I travel because they're general and can waste time on things I'm not interested in, on top of costing a lot. But this is easy to use, I can stop listening whenever I want, and isn't more than I want to spend. LOVE it!Will there be a website with a map where all the sites are listed? Perhaps even a suggested walking tour to hit most of them up?

@redmike: You nailed it. I couldn't have said it better myself. In fact, I think I did not say it better. So thanks for saying it!

@AUDiodREY: Great idea Audiodrey! That's actually part of the plan. Users will be encouraged to add their own content either by leaving a voicemail or uploading a file using the SoundCloud App where they can add info about the site not included in the audio, they can document what's currently happening at the site, or they can just leave questions or comments.

Yes, Yes, Yes the most important aspect of this idea is sharing audio about real experiences with the daily passerby who overlooks some of the unique stories that can be share that makes a space a place.

So awesome Laura! There are so many Detroit 'place-based stereotypes'. These audio tours would make great multimedia pieces for those of us outside the city too...

Great idea, Laura! And it's very good that you remember not everyone's got an iPhone. I can't say I know much about Detroit, but if there's any way I can help, let me know. May this idea spread to every city.

Every city needs a project like this. Or every place in the world. I'd love to see a participatory element – like where people could leave a voicemail and respond with their experience of a particular place. (Market sounds in here are amazing, by the way. I want some of those kale chips now.)

@stephdub: Thanks so much for the enthusiasm, Steph! One of the many cool things I've learned about Detroit is that there is a huge network of hardcore Detroit expat cheerleaders spread out across the country. You guys would be part of the target audience for this project. I'd love for you to be able to hit up a few Detroit Mobile Audio Tour sites while visiting the fam during the holidays. If you or any of your friends have any ideas or feedback for me, feel free to contact me at laurasnewemail@gmail.com

Sounds like a great idea. Don't hear much from Detroit on radio...

THIS IS SUCH AN AWESOME IDEA. I'm in love with it. Being born and raised in metro Detroit, spreading the word about the rich culture, history, and overall essence of the city has been a huge passion of mine since moving away. The city needs something like this. An accessible, no cost way, to educate tourists and residents on everything that makes Detroit the awesome city it is. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Great luck.

FYI I know I suck at drums and this is a poor recording, it was just the easiest way for me to grab some beats owned by me. Also I thought including my crap drumming would show a bit about my personality. These drums are significant bc I bought them shortly after moving to Detroit. As a former nomad, owning a drum set shows my commitment to living in this city. Now I just need to start practicing them...
