About
Katsy Lee has loved electronic dance music for as long as she could name her favourite music genre. She recalls sitting still and wide-eyed as she heard The Chemical Brothers’ “Hey Boy Hey Girl” on MTV at age ten. Dance music – heady, impassioned and inspiring - led her down paths that wouldn’t be the same alleys without it. She delved into various subgenres: house, trance, progressive, minimal, electro; loving material from Hed Kandi, Ministry of Sound, Defected, Anjunabeats, Global Underground and Renaissance. Fresh into high school, she dove into the Manila club scene, seeking the music she loved played by the DJs who inspired her. She sought to express her love for music in dance and in writing, blogging album reviews and publishing poetry influenced by dance music.
As an artist, the call to express her passion for music through DJing was inevitable. She is grateful to Miguel Dado for introducing her to the world behind the decks in 2006. In 2007 she enrolled in Spin City DJ Academy, where she learned the basics of DJing under Funk Avy, Emil Angeles and Jessie Suaco. In 2010, she became a student of Looper Beat Academy under Mark Nicosia, who is continuously training her to elevate the soul and electrify the party.
She has played in venues around Manila, including being a resident DJ of Izumi and Fiamma with Bobby Maddatu and Toons Canoy, and having been a regular at Izakaya with Aleks Pierson and Distillery Jupiter with Cherry Bombs. She is a member of The Wildlife, an electro and dubstep party and production team. In 2011, she won the Spin City party DJ Competition at TIME in Manila. She is the 2012 Pioneer Philippines Digital DJ Battle Champion and represented the country in the Pioneer DJ Asia Pacific Finals, landing 4th place in the region. She was also head cheerleader for the varsity squad of the Ateneo de Manila University, was a member of the Ateneo Musicians’ Pool, and works at ABS-CBN News Channel.
For Katsy, music foremost inspires the soul, and a night out illuminates and opens worlds of imagination and possibility. ‘Never Be Ordinary’! :)
