About

LANTVRN

Formed as an experimental recording project by Camerin Kelly in 2005 as Lantern Black Lodge, LANTVRN continues to be a mysterious trip through the underground corridors of Los Angeles.

Beginning as a broad collective with loosely-defined membership, its core members – Kelly, Thomas Mahoneyt (Jan Michael Vincent Car Crash) and Casey Barclay (Moab) – assembled around the Echo Park Lodge, a residence in an old neighborhood north of downtown LA. The home and its inhabitants quickly became notorious for psychedelic gatherings, occult rituals, hauntings, and the ever-present nightly Hum, an unknown phenomena emitting from the nearby hills of Elysian Park and beyond.

While activities around the Echo Park Lodge abated for a time, Trademark Recordings – in the spirit of documenting the soundtrack to another infamous chapter in LA's music history – released Lantern Black Lodge's first album, Veiled Unveiler. Shortly after, the project went on indefinite hiatus.

In late 2008, Kelly recorded demos of songs written in prior years and presented them to Mahoney and Barclay, whom he asked to join under the new name LANTVRN. The fledgling band started performing at clubs and gatherings throughout Los Angeles and southern California. “Dangerous,” a song recorded in a haunted house on the coast of Northern California with ex-drummer Michael Hamm, became LANTVRN's calling card, showcasing its ethereal mixture of 60s-influenced rock with heavy waves of shoegaze and slight strains of experimental black metal (an extreme polar opposite setting the group apart from its brethren).

A wide-range of art and artists influence LANTVRN, including Helena Blavatsky, Frank Herbert, Aleister Crowley, Milton, Richard Brautigan, Andrei Tarkovsky, Swans, The Pretty Things, The Velvet Underground.

Kelly says, "I envision LANTVRN as a massive art project, which right now is in its infancy. Death is something that I have always held close to me, and I feel its power encompassing me daily. But we cannot fear the end; through our art we are embracing the beyond, its beauty, its light, but also it’s all-destructive power. We are performing a ritual, and hopefully, for our audience, a cosmic séance.”

LANTVRN is currently at work in Los Angeles. Mixing up the medicine.
