In the fall of my 2011 semester at school I did a documentary/dramatic piece about the Penn State scandal that rocked the nation at the time. I drew inspiration from the man at the center of the firestorm: Jerry Sandusky—one of the most hated men in America today. In this piece my intent was to tell the story of the sex abuse scandal through ongoing broadcasts throughout the media. I also had the intent of not only telling the story through these sound bites, but also to portray the overwhelming amount of opinions that were floating around in the media about Jerry Sandusky and the child sex abuse charges. Despite what the law has to say (we must presume someone is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt) if it were up to the court of opinion I suggest with this piece that this man would be tried, and hanged for his crimes before he even stepped into a court of law. Ultimately my intent was to leave it up to the listener to ponder whether Sandusky is innocent or guilty given the charges brought against him, and to decide if they truly believe someone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The footage that I used for this project involved over twenty instances in the media that talked about Jerry Sandusky, the scandal, Penn State, and the other football coaches tied to him. This included local news, nightly national news, radio broadcast, and TV talk show snippets that I recorded off of my DVR at home or found pre-recorded online.
In the beginning of my project I wanted to set up the listener for the explanation of the scandal, and the charges brought against Sandusky as well as some of his peers. I especially tried to align each sound bite together so it sounded like a continuous news story despite the different media outlets the bites were coming from. I repeated some of the phrasing used by some of the journalists to emphasize the gravity of the situation as well as the repeated imagery and words reporters used. I at times modified the clips with reverb, phaser, and flanger effects to stand out more to the ear of the listener. Sometimes I really liked the effect, but at other times I was unable to get it to where I wanted it. In the future I plan to spend more time with processes and effects to come to the desired sound I want.

I wanted to do something thought provoking, and something relevant at the time. Looking back on it now that it is the fall of 2012....I'm happy this guy is behind bars, and in my opinion it makes the last fifteen seconds of this piece that much creepier XD Did not predict that!!
