    (A work in progress mix)

I have edited quite a few pieces in the past, but nothing has been more intimidating than this second audio project. I have never done any type of music mixing that didn’t just involve simple slicing, blending, and volume control so this was an entirely new, and admittedly very challenging experience for me. Initially I started out with a mix that had the country tones and elements of Matt V.'s song re-worked to sound more like an upbeat country song. Yet, what I started to realize several hours later was that it wouldn’t work out at all like I envisioned. This was because of the sad tone the original piece carried. So I entirely scrapped my original idea, got a bit ambitious, and decided use the raw tracks as well as outside song elements to create a reflective, somber mix. My intent with the piece was to show a girl reflecting upon her loneliness (I imagined Heather from the Silent Hill series). For example the lyrics at one point are reorganized to say, “Person from my dreams…you haven’t noticed me...you haven’t noticed you and I…I’ll probably just cry”.
After changing my sound strategy I started to begin on the raw tracks that music artist Matt provided for our class. At the beginning of the piece I tried to use every track that was given in the assignment to the best of my ability. I added some compression to the drum tracks, and kicked up the volume on some of the drums (the kick, overheads) while lowering others (the hi-hat, shaker). I also have never tried any panning in my previous creations so I had the opportunity to learn from Matt’s notes and implement that technique. At the beginning I made these vocals intentionally ‘flat’ sounding with EQ effects. This was because I imagined an unenthusiastic, sad girl singing this upbeat but sad melody, and deciding mid-way that she was ready to address how she really felt: lonely. This is where I began to introduce the outside elements as well as play with some of the vocals, and raw drum tracks.
I knew that if I wanted to achieve a kind of empty, desolate feeling for track I needed to bring in other outside elements that were not country sounding. Of these included 2 record scratch/interruptions which I used as transitional tracks. The phrase “you and I’ from Lady Gaga’s You and I was used to intermix and change the lyric “You have noticed me” into “You haven’t noticed you and I”. I did this to add to the tonal depth of the track. The house type beat which I overlaid repeatedly and stretched was from a musical soundscape piece that producer Nick Berkte did on the culture of Tibet. Despite the challenges of putting these outside sounds together effectively I also wanted to challenge myself and put Matt’s tracks to work within this. I used the snare, hi-hat, and two overhead drums to build in a crescendo at points of the mix to add some rhythm variance. Overall though, my biggest challenge was integrating all of these elements into the piece with the ‘country-esque’ tone of the singer. I took out some of the twang in Matt’s singer’s voice with a buss track that involved reverb, echo, and compression effects. I repeated, stretched, sliced, and reorganized the lyrics in a different way to get the intended feeling of loneliness across. Upon further reflection of my process, I think there were things I did well, but also a lot I could have improved upon.
