'You'll Never Be Mine' video created by EGO
My name is Lance. How are you?
I've always been drawn to music expressing emotion, a message, a musical gesture.
One coloured in rich textures, great full arrangements that somehow still seem to have space in the mix. Real musicians playing real instruments (not laptops) through chunky, analogue hardware in expensive studios. Only the very best would have a chance to present their work to the masses on stage or on wax.
I think a lot of house and disco producers today are looking back in time to find inspiration, when the groove drove a song - humans with instruments drove the song. Not white-noise and a laptop accompanied by two Co2 cannons. Music with soul, music with honesty. Music that invites you in and holds on forever.
A SIDE - 'You'll Never Be Mine'
One such band that I constantly go back to is the S.O.S. Band.. in particular their song 'Just Be Good To Me'. You've probably heard the vocal hook before, I'm sure:
From the lyrical content, to the melody, to the vocal performance itself I am mind blown every single time. It's like you can actually hear Mary Davis' pain in the delivery. I found a crappy accapella, but a lot was near unusable bar the plaintive croon of, 'you'll never be mine'.
I think I've got this edit to a good place blending, new with old... but at the core, using that original sample as a grounding so I didn't stray too far and destroy her initial message.
B SIDE - 'The Way I Feel About You'
The vocal sample is the from the S.O.S Band's single 'The Finest', released in 1986.
With this vocal I kept quite true to the original and let it run. My approach to this track references the 90's for the harmonic material and drum groove but ducks back to the 70's with mellotron strings and bass with flat wounds that I played in to the track live.
Obviously I'm not the only fan of the S.O.S Band out there. A few weeks after finishing this edit I heard that one half of the Artful Dodger had released their own track featuring this sample - compare it with mine and see what you reckon!
Cheers to the SOS Band for their amazing musicianship. Hope you like the tracks.
