Menahem Pressler, a living legend of the piano, has coupled three Viennese Classical works for this 'birthday album'. In this recital, the tradition is Viennese. The city plays a key role in this music, as was later to be the case in Leipzig with Mendelssohn and Schumann.
Sonata No.18 is a magnificent work, but very tricky to interpret. In a sense, there are no dramatic effects in this music. The first movement, Molto moderato e cantabile, is a fantasia, but you can’t reproduce its character of ‘fantasy’ if you don’t feel it yourself.
