BIO: My name is Joe Jonker, and I'm a 19 year old electronic dance music (EDM) producer from Holland, Michigan. I've been producing music under the alias of 'Known To Be Lethal' since 2009, and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Initially, I was inspired by popular artists such as Justice, The Bloody Beetroots, and Boys Noize and thus focused on producing hard-hitting electro house creations. As I became increasingly interested in electronic dance music, I was introduced to genres such as IDM, chiptune, dubstep, etc. From then on, the songs that I created often reflected the nature of whatever EDM genre that I had most recently discovered. Subsequently, I had a difficult time deciding what sort of style/genre I wished to identify myself with. Recently, however, that has changed. Tracks by artists such as Ratatat, Pretty Lights, Emancipator, and Aydio have heavily impacted me. I love the complex textures, timbres, and rhythms present in their songs, and I find the concept of employing an eclectic selection of instruments and sounds in a single song to be completely amazing. Therefore, I have decided to move in a creative direction that has less in common with Justice, and more in common with Pretty Lights. For an idea of what kind of tracks you can be expecting from me in the future, take a listen to my song "Quantum." I am extremely excited to produce more music, and am planning on posting new tracks regularly, so be sure to check back for updates!
CREATIVE PROCESS: Strangely enough, the way I make music really springs off of word associations and colors. When I start a new track, I first think of a title. Then, I try to create a tonal palette that, to me, fits the title of the song. Sometimes I'll have a certain color in mind for a song, I will then try to create sounds that I associate with the color I have in mind. For example, I made the track 'NuNexia' while imagining a crisp, shiny, acid green. While, I know that this process might seem strange, I find it highly effective and easy to utilize.
ARTISTS I LIKE: Muse, Justice, Lightning Bolt, Nine Inch Nails, Aydio, Maksim Mrvica, Squarepusher, Pretty Lights, Aphex Twin, Ratatat, Amon Tobin, Visc, Jon Hopkins, and countless others.
MY "STUDIO" SETUP: I use an extremely simple setup, I have my laptop, studio monitors, and interface....and that's it for hardware. I don't use a midi keyboard, I prefer to draw out melodies on the piano roll, actually. As for software, I run everything through my DAW of choice, Ableton Live 8. I use some simple VSTs for synth patches, among them Sylenth1, Massive, Arturia MiniMoog V, and Edirol Orchestral. For 8 Bit / chiptune sounds, I go to VST instruments like FMMF, miniSID, and VST effects like CMT Bitcrusher and Ableton's Erosion plugin.
