The grooves are the guru no matter what the style. Kill Paris can sweep the listener from guitar-driven blues moves to downtempo-tronica without, so to speak, skipping a beat. Kill Paris kills with equal aplomb through instrumental hypnosis and vocally endowed songcraft. The single, “Another Day,” delivers the mid-paced electronica goods with a tingling dose of contemporary R&B just to make the dish spicier and give it extra sizzle (not that it was lacking any to begin with). Manipulated vocals with soul yet robo-twang singing from a surrounding of electronic hooks in a tune whose mid-tempo pulse is restrained enough to chill to but still has enough sway to get a little slo-mo sexy dance on with your hot numero uno. The song is distinctive among the Kill Paris canon in more ways than one. It’s electronic origins, for example. “There are a few other dance-influenced tracks on the album, but the majority of the songs are much more guitar-oriented,” Kill Paris’ Corey Baker explains. “Another Day” is also the only vocal track on the album. Kill Paris’ versatility allows for a multi-faceted, kaleidoscopic exploration of groove-giving. This artist has more ways to use hooks than all the lonely-couple-in-a-car urban legends combined could hope to muster. “My sound is constantly evolving,” he says. “I really dislike falling in a niche and doing what is easy. The more I challenge myself, the more prosperous my music becomes.” And yet Kill Paris’ central personality is never lost in the shuffle. Focus remains no matter how far Kill Paris ranges in the quest to find fresh ways to make heads bob and unite bodies and rhythm into oneness. Corey Baker began this project as a lark. “Kill Paris originally started out as me recording silly guitar songs with an outdated computer,” he says, revealing that right from the start, the electronic and the organic went hand-in-hand. Now, Kill Paris is a serious music-making well of creation. “Jamison Shaffer (Great Days End) was the first drummer I had ever played with,” Baker says, giving a hint at the chemistry and synergy that quickly arose between he and his musical partner. “We went on to write numerous songs about life and our perspectives on the northern half of America.” Baker has released a handful of EPs prior to the new CD, including “Dear Emma” and the appropriately titled “Kaleidoscope Dreams,” what he calls “a small concept album reflecting on reality versus dreams.”
