Theaster Gates grew up singing gospel music, and became a professional potter. Inspired during an artistic residency in Japan, he fused together the richness of meditation with the sounds of soul, and created The Black Monks of Mississippi.

You can hear the Black Monks perform this Sunday at MOCA's Geffen Contemporary, where Gates' art piece "An Epitaph for Civil Rights" is also on display. KCRW's Lisa Napoli interviews the artist.
