The Delicate appears on One Less Heartless To Fear, the new album from Shipping News, available now on LP through Karate Body's Webstore (http://www.karatebodyrecords.com/kbr-webstore).
It’s their first new full-length album since "Flies The Fields" (2005) and a helluva lot has happened in the last five years. Two weddings, fatherhood, serious illness, a presidential election, multiple wars, city moves, two Batman films and lots of time with friends playing songs.
These things seem to have inspired the band to make their most aggressive and adolescent album to date. Shipping News has jettisoned the long songs (and glacial tempos) of the past and is concentrating on energetic blasts of noisy rock (with a little gallows humor thrown in). While slipping into a slightly more sympathetic mood once or twice, the new songs are stripped down and pretty much nasty.
Working for the first time with the kind folks at Karate Body (LP) and Noise Pollution (CD) in the U.S; AfricanTape and Ruminance in Europe, this album marks the 14th year of the band's existence. "One Less Heartless To Fear" features seven brand new songs and two "oldies" recorded live on a digital multitrack system at the all-ages venue Skull Alley (Louisville) and The O-Nest (Tokyo).
Please enjoy the first single "The Delicate” out Aug. 16.
“Flies The Fields” will fascinate and terrify in equal measure. —Drowned
In Sound
Riddled with unbreathable energy and high-strung despair. —Splendid
They're experienced mathematicians who not only came to rock, but to feel, a sound that's been attempted by thousands, but rarely achieved.
—Pitchfork
Among the bands making post-rock revisions to the conventional pop formula, few offer hooks as gratifying as Shipping News. —Alternative Press
An enjoyable switchback ride through instrumental post-rock riff-making and full-on angst-ridden rocking out. —URB
Shipping News ... drifts through several emotional and time signature changes, but it is executed with confident hands that know full well when to pull back and lock tight ... before you realize it, you’re overcome. —SPIN (online)
Brooding. Made by people who've read the odd book. Worth owning. —MOJO
