Created as part of the Disquiet Junto, details below.

This week, a week in which the tropical storm Sandy devastated a great deal of the eastern US, Cuba, and Haiti, the goal was to take two field recordings of the storm (by Michael Raphael, link below) and to transform them into something which represents 'the calm after the storm'. The track should start off 'stormy' and move into something 'placid'.

I put the samples into the modular, and created a loop that normally runs in a stable state, that is, it's a recognizable loop. But the loop gets interrupted by a random number based on the intensity of the samples - and this throws the loop off kilter by altering components of the loop.

I included sounds from a few oscillators, but they are being frequency modulated by the sample sounds, so that the samples are influencing everything in this piece.

What you hear in the beginning is the loop being thrown around here and there, then slowly I decrease the influence the interruption has over the loop until it returns into something stable.

I wanted the stormy part to be unsettling, so I purposefully let the audio distort and clip.

I then used the softsynth Absynth to create a granular texture based on the original samples to give the whole thing a peaceful end.

The source audio from the 2012 storm Sandy was documented by Michael Raphael, an SFX recordist who maintains the field recording blog Fieldsepulchra at His sound effects can be found at Rabbit Ears Audio,
