Growing up on a diet of Hip Hop, RnB and Soul, J Slinky was introduced to House music in it's then formative and now, classic years in the early 90's.
A major influence was his uncle's vast record collection from labels such as Acid Jazz, Jasper Street Co, Nervous Records and Strictly Rhythm.
"It was at this young age that I was made aware of great artists such as MAW, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez."
As a hip-hop head, this admiration for house would lay beneath the surface of his musical taste, until it was re-discovered in 95/96, with the advent of an exciting new genre starting to take hold on the capital's airwaves and the Underground / London scene.
"I remember, as an underage clubber, the first time I heard Double 99's RIP Groove, that baseline. Looking back, that record changed my whole musical path to this day. You could say it was a deep inspiration!"
It wasn't until 97/98, that J started buying records himself, having before that been content to listen to the tape packs from garage raves that were common back then. This despite the fact that he didn't own any decks to play them on! Fortunately, his close friend, owned a pair of belt driven Soundlab's.
"I was just crazy about the music, it had such an infectious feeling on me, the buzz from the amazing tunes being produced and that feeling of going down to the record shop in London's West End."
J continued developing his record collection (acquiring a pair of Technic 1210's along the way!). Although DJing remained firmly a much loved hobby, J started playing out and about in the local area of Sussex on a regular basis and has played alongside a fair few underground legends such as Matt Jam Lamont, DJ EZ and many others. He also dabbled in putting on promotions with some success.
J's love of House, in particular, the classic deep and soulful garage sound, has remained and is stronger than ever. In 2013, as this music comes back into the spotlight, J is looking forward to the opportunities this will bring. Be sure to check for the regular updates his soundcloud page with new mixes, where you will hear him pushing fresh music from deep and soulful house, garage and nu disco, always with an ode to that classic 90's sound.
