A Smoky Glass [disquiet0041-dirtyminimalism]
Doing minimal and ambient music is a natural thing for me. But what makes this track "dirty" is the use of some digital dirty tricks in its construction—well, maybe not really dirty, but they’re things I rarely or never do in my music. First of all, the source is an existing track: a piece I did about a week ago called "Object III Sketch." I reversed the track (just like they did on all those groovy ‘60s psychedelic records). After that, I applied a liberal coating of chorus, an effect I haven’t used since the late ’80s. (It doesn't work with pitch-sensitive music.) Next, spread on a layer of long delay (creamy, sonic Nutella). Finally, I sped up another version of the file (just like Alvin and the Chipmonks) and cross-faded it in. The result is a bit smoky, cloudy and dirty. And now I feel dirty. Where’s the Lava?
