Joseph Salvador (a.k.a. José Salvador, Zé Salvador) is a musician, composer, record producer, label boss and New Media designer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Currently artist with Black Tulip, M.D.A., The Funky Mood Orchestra and Ultradisco Society, born in Portugal, Joseph Salvador had the first music lessons from his grand uncle of the same name who was a composer and music director of national Philharmonic Orchestras.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s learned to play the guitar and electric organ and plays in garage rock bands. A journalist at the age of 16, reporter at the Cascais Jazz festivals, co-organizes jazz exhibitions for the Rotary Club. In the same year travels on his own through Europe and visits Amsterdam for the first time.
In the mid 70’s co-owns and manages the Zodiac Café in Lisbon, programming bands of experimental music, free jazz, blues and rock, works as a journalist for a daily newspaper, studies Philosophy and teaches Literature and Art at a secondary school.
In the late 70’s Joseph Salvador leaves Portugal to Amsterdam to pursue studies in Music and Graphic Design. He does artwork for the Disco organizations of Rhythm Import and Eddy de Clercq. In the early 80’s creates the music studio Centre of the Wheel at the old jail building ‘De Balie’, next to the Paradiso and Melkweg rock venues. In the next years Joseph Salvador also studies Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. His first commercial recordings were done in 1984 at the Berlin’s Conservatory studios and released in 1986 by Polygram.
In 1988 funds and owns the Portland Recording Studios and the next year the Portland Music Publishing company, a division of EMI Music Publishing Holland. In 1989 starts TINK! Records, one of Holland’s initial House labels and the first Dutch independent dance music label to make a joint-venture with a major company EMI Records and thus creating a catalogue of 25 releases and 3 sub-labels.
In the early to mid 90’s Joseph Salvador writes and produces together with and for different artists. The work is released on TINK! Records, EMI records and Sony Music, licensed worldwide to record labels and on CD compilations. Artists such as Black Tulip (NL), Wendell Morrison (USA), Marian Rolle (USA), Venus (NL), Electronic Voodoo (NL), M.D.A. feat. Lilian Vieira (Brazil), M.D.A. feat. Nayma (Portugal), Thyone Girls (NL), Digital Cartel (NL), Lowlife Winners (NL), EDC / Eddy de Clercq (NL), Formosa (UK, NL, D), Dany Silva (Cabo Verde) and Sloopy Mike Gyamfi (Ghana).
In 1998, Joseph Salvador manages the Club 909 and the Protest Club, saturday night events at the Club Ministry in Amsterdam, creating the club concepts, graphic arts and the DJ/VJ programming.
From 1999 to 2004 Joseph Salvador switches his attention to graphic design and New Media to join Total Design / Total Identity, one of the most prestigious Dutch Design companies. In 2004 starts his own company Joseph Salvador – Internet and Multimedia.
In 2009 Joseph Salvador starts Portland Sound studios and Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! Music and Events companies.
