I've been listening to a lot of Cartola recently. I wrote this tune but couldn't get any words for it. Then Barbara Browning offered to write some. Knowing that she speaks Portuguese, I pushed her in that direction. I know I'm trampling all over the language, but Barbara gave me some pointers on how to avoid some of the pitfalls, not all of which I ignored. Big Thanks to Barbara for the help on this, I think her lyric really makes this song.

Thanks to Iz for some juicy flute.

Incidentally, this is mixed by me using medieval techniques and a total lack of skill. If anyone feels moved to do better, I could throw you the stems.

    Lyrics: barbarabrowning
    Flute: isabel hollingum
    Composition and everything else: me

já no começo das coisas tu disse que ama
sempre com os pés no chão, história sem trama
eu tentei seguir as regras tuas, bem
tu que manda, tu que diz, eu sei
más com o tempo passando, fiquei mole
eu comecei a sonhar, perdi o controle
    nunca perguntei
acabou e eu bem sei porque
    tu diz,
    “eu quis”
    tu diz,
    “eu quis”

    Roughly translates as:
right from the start, you said you always love
with both feet on the ground, a story without a plot.
i tried to follow your rules, dear -
you’re the boss, you say what goes, i know.
but with the passing of time, i got lazy,
i started to dream, i lost control.
    i never even asked -
it ended and i know perfectly well why.
    you said,
    “i wanted it this way.”
    you said,
“i wanted it this way." ”
