I've been listening to a lot of Cartola recently. I wrote this tune but couldn't get any words for it. Then Barbara Browning offered to write some. Knowing that she speaks Portuguese, I pushed her in that direction. I know I'm trampling all over the language, but Barbara gave me some pointers on how to avoid some of the pitfalls, not all of which I ignored. Big Thanks to Barbara for the help on this, I think her lyric really makes this song.
Thanks to Iz for some juicy flute.
Incidentally, this is mixed by me using medieval techniques and a total lack of skill. If anyone feels moved to do better, I could throw you the stems.
Lyrics: barbarabrowning
Flute: isabel hollingum
Composition and everything else: me
já no começo das coisas tu disse que ama
sempre com os pés no chão, história sem trama
eu tentei seguir as regras tuas, bem
tu que manda, tu que diz, eu sei
más com o tempo passando, fiquei mole
eu comecei a sonhar, perdi o controle
nunca perguntei
acabou e eu bem sei porque
tu diz,
“eu quis”
tu diz,
“eu quis”
Roughly translates as:
right from the start, you said you always love
with both feet on the ground, a story without a plot.
i tried to follow your rules, dear -
you’re the boss, you say what goes, i know.
but with the passing of time, i got lazy,
i started to dream, i lost control.
i never even asked -
it ended and i know perfectly well why.
you said,
“i wanted it this way.”
you said,
“i wanted it this way." ”
@marycigarettes: Obrigado Mary. Good to get some quality ears like yours on this.
@qvarsebo: Thanks Jonas, I try to do as little harm as possible with my clumsy shekere and agogo efforts
@John Hollingum: Thank you so much for the tip. I have noticed SC aren't notifying me with responses to comments, so had I not come back for another listen I would have missed this. Billie and Joao are working like a dream for you. Cheers and my best wishes, Mark
@markjbennett: Thanks Mark. When I think of phrasing, I think of Billie Holiday. Late phrasing is kind of a chicken run. The one who starts the line first loses. But you do have to make sure you don't go over the edge of the cliff too. But a lot of it is just trying to use normal speech phrasing. Some of it even involves getting ahead of the line, which is more of a Joao Gilberto kind of trick.
Hi John, I really admire how your music has your trademark emotive phrasing written all over whether you sing in English or Portuguese. I'm not sure how you achieve that but I don't believe in demystifying music too much. Sua música é bonita. Best wishes, Mark
@mr snow man: Hehe, no boats involved. I took that pic in greenwich. Biggest ship in a bottle I've ever seen.
@soulmetricsystem: Thanks Rik. Everything is better with agogo

@Jane Shin: Thanks Jane, nice to hear it takes you somewhere. The song was actually written in the middle of winter in London and New York. I think I was trying to boost my vitamin D levels with it.
This is magical. I imagine listening to this while traveling by train somewhere in Portugal.
Oh, the flute! Instantly brought me back to memories of my playing flute back in grade school.
