John Adam Smith was raised in Missoula, Montana. Inspired by his father and artists like Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia, and Jimmy Hendrix, John started playing guitar when he was 10 years old. Landing his first Missoula gigs at the age of 15, John's journey to his life and profession as a songwriter and musician began. From local Missoula bands such as Smitty and the Boss and CottonWood Draw, to The John Adam Smith Band and John's international one man band performances, his original material and danceable live performances have caught the attention of music lovers throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia.
John's background and education are rooted in Traditional West African music. Since his teens, John has studied with a handful of Master Djembefolas including his two most influential teachers, Dibo Camera and Abdoul Doumbia. Combining his rhythmical root's with intricate acoustic compositions and passionate songwriting, John has developed a unique and original sound. Whether you dance or just kick back and listen, the pulse of this multi-instrumentalist's stomp box and infectious melodies bring uplifting inspirations into the atmosphere.
In 2012 John produced and recorded Ponderosa Skies, his first full length album. Ponderosa Skies was released in June of 2013 at the Top Hat Lounge in Missoula. John had been writing and composing this collection of songs since the age of 16. The album was recorded and co-produced with Chris Cunningham at Basecamp Recording in Bozeman, Montana. Chris is one of two members of the internationally cherished folk pop duo, Storyhill. The first 1,000 copies of Ponderosa Skies have made their way to fans throughout the NorthWest United States and Australia.
John is currently following life's inspirations and continuing his journey as a musician and story teller. Aspiring to keep his heart open and mind ready for the changes life brings. He is in love with this chance to share his words with the wonderful folks that take the time to listen.
