RUNNING RIOT IN NEWQUAY: THE JOEY RIOT INTERVIEW: HTID SUMMER GATHERING WEEKENDER
Joey Riot’s smash through rise and rise into UK hardcore rave music’s highest ranks has been a thrilling one. One of Scotland’s finest hardcore sons, he’s worked harder than the average to achieve a great amount in a seemingly short amount of time. With ideas a plenty, an incredible Discography that details everything from singles that rise from self written poetry set to a beat of anything up to 200 beats per minute on his and DJ Kurt’s very own award winning Lethal Theory Records, to best selling packed CD compilation albums for the likes of Ministry Of Sound, it’s a bold but truthful statement that Joey is definitely no slouch.
Impressing crowds that swell to as much as (if not sometimes more than) five figures in attendance in any one arena the World over, his boundless energy and enthusiasm as a DJ (and sometimes as an MC), perfects an all round package of unrivalled talent. Unravel that package and you’ll find a cleverly fused combination of Writer, Musician, Vocalist, Recording Artist, Label Manager, Presenter (Radio & TV), DJ, MC, Promoter and all round performer making him one of the rave scene’s most in demand entertainers.
Like an epic strobe light, just brightly beaming full of creative energy, he’s successfully managed all of the above job titles with reportable success and fans will be pleased to know, he’s joining us not once, but twice at this month’s HTID Summer Gathering Weekender in Newquay in Cornwall. We ran Riot with Joey earlier this week to get the latest on all things Joseph and that Lethal Theory of his.
Joey, we all know the story of how you used to scratch Mother Riot’s records whilst on the Gramophone as a child. As an adult and professional now - you lead an immensely busy lifestyle, what with studio production, managing Lethal Theory on the whole, shows, DJ’ing, so much going on; is this how you imagined it would be as a child growing up? Did you ever see yourself in the position you are in now?
"(Laughs loudly) I wasn’t quite scratching my mother’s Gramophone. How old do you think I am Jon? I wanted to be a Marine Biologist when I was a nipper, music was always a hobby. I only got serious about it as a career when I was in my mid 20’s, that’s when I realised I had it in me to make it."
Make it you did too, good work Sir. On a different note, what’s the best idea you ever came up with whilst on the Toilet?
"I shit you not, but I have most of my best ideas when I’m sat on the throne!"
Ha, ha, ha. Apparently it’s all to do with the blood flow to the brain when you, well, you get the picture. Good (and indeed best) ideas in mind, you’ve written many tracks, but of them all which is your personal favourite, which is the ravers favourite and which sold the most units and indeed are they three separate tracks or are they all one and the same?
"‘The Power Within’ is probably my all time favourite and seems to be the raver’s too."
We’d agree with that! Lethal Theory continues to shine as one of the most prominent labels within the scene; you’ve picked up how many awards now across the board? In your own opinion, what keeps Lethal Theory top of its game and what’s to come, what’s fresh and brand new from Lethal Theory and indeed Joey Riot? What have you been working on?
"I’ve got 8 at home and we have won a total of ten awards. Most outstanding is winning ‘Best Label’ the last 3 years in a row and all this since 2006 when I won ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’. It blows me away actually just sitting here counting them up over the short period since we blasted on to the scene.
I just love what I do and I’m happiest when I’m working, which is non-stop as you know mate. I also surround myself with like-minded, driven individuals who want to be the best at what they do and even as we conduct this interview I’m also uploading all our new releases to our distributor. There will be a Lethal Theory release every week for the foreseeable future with a new iPhone app and album every fifteen weeks. You can buy all the Lethal Theory releases from http://www.trackitdown.net/recordlabel/126117/lethal-theory.html
You can also check out all my latest hardcore productions at JoeyRiot
I’ve also been working on a lot of harder edged stuff and I’m putting the finishing touches to an EP with Dark-Lite & DMR under our Destructive Tendencies alias for one of the biggest labels in Europe. There’s loads happening as per usual mate, I’m never one to sit and wait on things falling onto my lap, gotta get out there and make shit happen brother!"
That said, you’ve also had some outstanding gigs in your career, we’ll start by asking you to highlight your most memorable breathtaking, main stage moments as a DJ, but you have to bring the balance by telling us the worst / most random / most embarrassing one too...
"WestFest main stage the last 3 years are gigs I will never forget. Playing to crowds that size just makes me hungry for bigger things, love it!
Had some belting red necks while DJ’ing though. Jumped off the decks at Vibealite, attempting to land on the stage, jumped too far and cleared the stage then dropped to the floor about ten feet below and broke my foot in the process. Trying to show off and ending up in crutches… what a bell end! (Laughs heartily)."
Ha, ha, ha. It’s good that you look back upon it fondly though and can laugh about it! With regard to looking back, if you had the opportunity, what would be your favourite Pop Culture inspired method of time travel (i.e.: Delorean, Tardis, etc); where would you travel to in said device and whilst there who would you want to speak to and what would you buy as a Souvenir to bring back with you?
"I’d use Sooty’s Magic Wand - “Izzy, wizzy, let’s get busy!” Then, I’d go back to the late 80’s to witness the kick off of the rave scene and go to all the big illegal M25 parties. I didn’t get out raving until the mid 90’s and always thought I was born too late.
I’d bring back Hixxy’s pony tail."
(We pause once again for laughter our side). Speaking of time, it’s almost up for those wanting to see you at HTID’s Summer Gathering Weekender on the 21st – 24th September in Newquay in Cornwall. Excited? Run us through what you’re up to there as you’ve got one or two sets going off have you not?
"I have a DJ set on the Friday night, rest assured I’ll be pulling out all the stops and putting on one hell of a show for the ravers, standard! Saturday I’m back to back with hardcore techno legend Scorpio at the afternoon Beach Party. That’s gonna be insane as is the whole weekend… I cannot wait!"
HTID is of course the big brother of Raverbaby, which, you have a rather special engagement with soon don’t you? One that sees you on Promoter & Host duties if we’re not mistaken... give us the rundown on what to look forward to there...
"I’m hosting the Pre-Party again after the HUGE success of the last one. ‘Joey Riot & Friends’ touch down again at Roadmender for the ‘Raverbaby Official Pre-Party’ and once again it will be a journey through sound. I’ll be DJ’ing for 3 hours, starting off with house and filthy electro, moving on to trance, then hard dance, hardstyle, drum & bass, hardcore and gabber showcasing all the genres I produce and play.
Along the way my friends in the scene will be jumping on and off back to back with me, playing any one of those genres. Last time was unbelievable, started at 125bpm and finished somewhere around 220bpm. The crowd response was great and everyone went into the rave on a pure high, let’s do it again eh? Find out more about it via the Facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/events/410807322290279/"
Let’s play ‘Let’s Pretend’. As a thanks for conducting this interview with us, we’ve arranged for you to raise hell for a night with any celebrity of your choice, who would you choose and why?
"I don’t think any celebrity could handle a night ‘raising hell’ with me Jon. Come on man!"
This is true, worth asking though! Give us the round-up of your plans for the rest of 2012 and what we should be looking forward to from you and Lethal Theory moving forward?
"I will continue to host the (Bi-Monthly) ‘Hardcore Heaven Podcast’ in conjunction with Lethal Theory & Quosh, showcasing all the best new music, special guest mixes and interviews as well as the usual banter when myself, Sy, Chris Unknown & Grant from Slammin’ Vinyl get together.
Subscribe to the Podcast via http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/hardcore-heaven/id460105826
The ‘Hard As Hell Podcast’ (also with the backing of HH and Slammin’ Vinyl), will be out next month and will showcase all the best in hardstyle and gabber. It’ll be hosted by yours truly with huge international guests and music that will scare your neighbours / parents / lightweights.
Lethal Theory will continue to release the best music that hardcore has to offer and supporting new talent like no other and pushing the boundaries to keep our scene fresh and I’ll be assaulting Europe with my harder edged sound. Keep your eyes peeled for BIG THINGS!"
Joey, good luck, thank you and we’ll see you on the Beach! Remember, Riot machines live longer with Calgon!
"Take 2 a day to keep the interviewers at bay! Thanks mate, see you all at the Weekender! I canny wait… WOO HOO!"
