About

João Castro Pinto is a Portuguese sound artist interessed in the art of composing silence with sounds.

He has graduated in Philosophy at the New University of Lisbon (F.C.S.H.) and is currently researching for his Ph.D. studies in Computer Music @ U.C.P. / C.I.T.A.R. - Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts.

João Castro Pinto’s sound work ranges between: field recordings / soundscape composition, dense droning, noise, electroacoustic, acousmatic & experimental electronic genres.

J. Castro Pinto attended master-classes in electroacoustic music composition with Francis Dhomont, François Bayle, Barry Truax, John Chowning, Simmon Emmerson, Morton Subotnick, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Takayuki Rai, Bertrand Dubedout and António de Sousa Dias.

J. Castro Pinto has presented his intermedia and sound work since the mid nineteens, in over 100 performances / concerts, all over Europe, the U.S.A. and Asia, in cities such as: N.Y.C., SEOUL, IOWA, BERLIN, COLOGNE, DORTMUND, MUNCHEN, VIENNA, KLOSTERNEUBURG, GRAZ, BOLOGNANO, ATHENS, UDEN, LISBOA, PORTO, FARO and performed in festivals and venues such as: SEOUL INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER MUSIC FESTIVAL, PNEM SOUND ART FESTIVAL, MÚSICA VIVA Electroacoustic Music festival, AVEIRO SÍNTESE ELECTROACOUSTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL, ORF (AUSTRIAN NATIONAL RADIO), The U.I.M.A. - University of Iowa Museum of Art [Iowa, U.S.A.], RADIALX – International Radio Art Festival, Sonic Scope Festival, Número Festival, Mascavado Festival, Super Stereo Demonstration, SAMMLUNG ESSL MUSEUM [Austria], CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN CENTER FOR MODERN ART [Lisbon], Centro Cultural de Belém [Lisbon], Casa da Música [Porto], etc...

Conceived and directed the "Hertzoscópio - Experimental & Transdisciplinary Arts Festival" dedicated to the divulgation of contemporary experimental music, video-art and intermedia. The first edition of the festival (2003) was co-directed with fellow sound artist and composer Nuno Morão.

Collaborates and plays frequently with renowned Portuguese and foreign artists from the sound art / experimental and improv. music scenes such as: Tom Hamilton (USA), Dr. Karlheinz Essl (AT), Gilles Aubry (CH), Bernhard Loibner (AT), Boris Hauf (AT), Thollem Mcdonas (USA), O.Blaat (JP), Koji Asano (JP), Nathan Fuhr (USA), Carlos Zíngaro (PT), Rafael Toral (PT), Coti (GR.), Paulo Raposo (PT), D’Incise (CH), John Grzinich (EE), Sei Miguel (PT), Variable Geometry Orchestra (PT), Ernesto Rodrigues (PT), Manuel Mota (PT), ANISOTROPUS (PT), Miguel Carvalhais (PT), André Gonçalves (PT), Anastasis Grivas (GR), Rodrigo Amado (PT), Hernâni Faustino(PT), Rui Faustino (PT), Blaise Siwula (USA), Jeremy Bernstein (USA), Kurt Ralske (USA), among many other artists.
