Just because I close my eyes when I open my mind to speak
You grabbed a fist full of words you barely understand
and emotions you have never known
to slam me down against the drafty wood
in some desperate hope of overpowering

    You did
    For a moment
    Overpower

Between the silent dumbness of self doubt
    And the final syllables flung
A memory saved me from my fall

Sometimes closing my eyes is how I see
Like when you were broken and in danger
I shared my belief in you until you believed
    And were saved

    My eyes closed then
    It was the only way
    Even after all this time
    I could see beyond
    so much darkness
    To find the light

    What’s given is gone
I will not call it to return
Less the burning shatter of bone be felt
Tripped into falling again by indignant words

    What I remembered
    I will not again forget
So that when death comes I can smile
Not because I want to go
But because I have nothing to regret

    No ignorance of humanity
    Of the human condition
Or how horrible it would be for me
If I were to become the genius you imagine
Instead of the one that I am

Sometimes closing my eyes is how I know
So let life come and I will not gaze upon her shortcomings
    They do not exist
Instead I will dance in poverty and in riches
Obscurity and in fame till I am content and
At peace with my own experience and expression
    Exhausted from the celebration.
