This duet from Jan Kopinski, tenor and Steve Iliffe, piano is a dedication to the director of the silent film, EARTH (ZEMLYA), Oleksandr Dovzhenko. It is from Jan's album EARTH and features improvisations on a theme. (live take - Jan plays a mark vi tenor and Steve is on a Steinway). The 1930 film is a particularly beautiful and influential one with Tarkovsky amongst Dovzhenko's many admirers. Writing for this Jan found the imagery and editing had an intense suspended quality that they try to capture, basing the rhythmic feel on Orthodox bell ringing.
