James Alaska is a London based composer. He began DJing at the age of 16, drawing inspiration from the likes of David Mancuso, Larry Levan and Danny Krivit. In the 90s and 00's he held DJ residencies in Liverpool and London. including stints at Magnet and Medicine playing with the likes of Andy Weatherall, Alfredo and Ladytron. He began producing music around 2003. Having come full circle from DJing he now produces intricate and delicate noise-infused soundworks as ‘The Alaska None’, using lo-fi obfuscated fragments from vinyl and tape which are muted, contorted and re-contextualised. Over recent years he has worked with choreographers and performers creating live soundtracks for performances and contemporary dance productions, most recently producing the soundtrack for 'Settlement' by Robbie Synge, which was nominated for the 2012 Place Prize. He also plays live occasionally with Tom Mudd as the duo 'vlk', and together they run the night 'LST- Live soundtracks' (www.livesoundtracks.co.uk) where composers and musicians present live scores to film and visuals.
