My name's Jacob Giles, I'm a producer / mc from Sydney. I've been a dnb head for over 13 years (My introduction was Roni Size New Forms, and Goldie's Timeless is my favourite album of all time.). I've been working on producing dnb for a long time but have alway had a bit of difficulty in finding the right sounds. This is a new track called Coming Down that I started recently, and I feel it's about time I put something into the cloud and get some opinions on how I can improve. This is an original track, and I also sing on it (with the help of Cubase variaudio - I'm still looking for a quality male vocalist), although the 'ethnic' sounding vocal throughout is an african folk singer smashed through autotune.
My goal has always been to combine pretty / melancholic melodies with the darker side of drum'n'bass - the platonic ideal of this for me is probably Dom and Roland's 'Punish Me'. That's the kind of feeling that I want to generate - the juxtaposition of the light and the dark side on a single track. Clownstep and that silly shit was a very disappointing time in dnb's history as far as I'm concerned, as this genre has so much more potential to convey complex emotions.
I'm not great at mixing (and this track is compressed to the hilt with a Liquid Mix) so at the moment I'm really just looking for feedback on the construction / production from a well-respected selector, as I won't go get it mixed till the arrangement's right. I would be truly grateful to hear any constructive criticism you have, I'd love to learn what mistakes I'm making with my sound. My email address is email@example.com.
I look forward to hearing from you,
